With respect, wouldn't that be more a "frustration"? Leaving the designation "disaster" more for things like the fires out West, the flooding down South, etc.

Re: How do you discover films to watch?

Hope you remembered to feed the cat! No animals in my house (unless you count the kiddo!) I now sit in awe in my living room watching pictures I never, ever dreamed I would see let alone own. I'm sad that I'll never get to see much of Theda Bara and there are so many things lost to time completely ...

Re: How do you discover films to watch?

I follow the recommendations in those wonderful books written by James Roots about silent comedies. It is really amazing how much we think alike, so if he enjoys a certain film, I'm pretty confident I will enjoy it too. Jim That's funny. I've never heard of him. Maybe he should become a member here...

Re: How do you discover films to watch?

I find the problem is finding time to watch them! I can definitely attest to that! Last night by the time I got my daughter cleaned up, put to bed, popped some popcorn and decided on a movie (went with Dinty) I ended up only able to watch half before I got too tired and had to go to bed. I'll finis...

Re: How do you discover films to watch?

Other than monitoring this site and browsing vendors' catalogs and YouTube, I find a lot of references in books. James Card's Seductive Cinema is where I learned about The Cossack Whip (1916). Blum's Pictorial History of the Silent Screen and all of K. Brownlow's books are good. I remember reading ...

How do you discover films to watch?

I was talking about this topic with someone recently and thought I'd pose it to all of you. With a limited supply of silent films out there on the market, how do you end up seeking out films to watch? Now I'm not as old as some of you (and maybe older than others, I don't know) but back in the mid 9...

I remember seeing this one years ago on AMC and enjoying it. I look forward to seeing it again. I procrastinated forever on the Ford at Fox Silent set so with this coming to BD I can't imagine that's worth getting now.

I keep buying blu-rays, but it's hard not to think of this as the future. I get that, and maybe one day when the Thomas the Tank Engine phase has passed and I have a little more free time, I'll check out FilmStruck. I agree that it's good for those "watch once" films and YouTube and the Internet Ar...

Oh by the way, KID BOOTS was recently restored in 4K just last year. One might think that would be a...

Re: The Ancient Law (1923) E.A. Dupont: Flicker Alley preord

BD/DVD Combo packs are pretty common these days. Pressing a DVD is trivial in terms of costs so it's probably cheaper to just make one of each, sell them together and call it a day.

Criterion tried this for a few releases but went back to separate releases.

The BFI put out a collection of hand tinted Pathe shorts in the UK that aren't restored and have what can best be called "Hipster bullshit" scores on them. Avoid that one at all cost.

The Wishing Ring. This film started out as a bit of a drag and then I thought it was going to go down a particular path but then surprised me by doing something different. The camera work was quite good for an American film of the time and it's definitely in that transitional period around the time...

Help identifying a silent film

So in one of my other hobbies, I was browsing around YouTube about old, outdated tech and came across this video:

https://youtu.be/yrxaBot3fsI?t=313" target="_blank

At 5:13 in, he shows a silent film on the TV. Any idea what it is?

Re: Why You Should Watch Silent Movies With Your Kid

In my experience, people who reject old movies on the whole never watched them as kids so they feel unfamiliar and uncomfortable, almost like putting a classic tome in front of a non-reader. It is intimidating. Could not agree more! My almost-2-year-old has been exposed to old movies since birth. I...

Will back as soon as I can. Are you going to simply translate the titles yourself (or via a translator) or are there existing records for what the original titles said?

Any idea what typeface you will be using?

I've long known that Samurai movies have a long history in Japan -- one of the Lumiere actualities from 1898 is Acteurs Japonais: Bataille au Sabre . However Orochi aka Serpent (1925) is the earliest full-fledged Samurai feature I've seen. In it, Tsumasaburô Bandô is a young samurai with ideal and ...
