Re: STAN AND OLLIE trailer

For what it's worth, my Facebook timeline is filled with people noticing this trailer and being VERY excited to see it. These are film people, sure, but not particularly NitrateVille kind of people. They're people currently in the industry, and mostly skewed towards working in visual effects and ani...

DVD was AWFUL. Blu-ray is always better, though not always perfect.

Google's daily doodle honors Melies today. It's a 360 degree animation, so you can scroll all around, or if you have a VR setup, it's in VR.

Yeah, I've used the MakeMKV method too. It's free, which is nice. Rip using MakeMKV from the Blu-ray drive in my PC, put the file on a thumb drive, and play from my Sony Blu-ray player.

I got mine and it looks GORGEOUS. The print and transfer is spectacular. I haven't watched it all the way through yet, because of work, so maybe there are parts from other, lesser quality prints, but I don't know. It's well worth getting.

Curse of the Cat People on Blu-ray in June!

I just noticed that Shout Factory will be releasing a Blu-ray of Curse of the Cat People on June 12th. This is great news!

Note to those who need it: According to the Shout Factory site, it's not close captioned.

Re: Motion blur induced by TV, the enemy of UHD

All Darc, I think you'll REALLY like these two videos. They're a discussion of resolution, and they were made by Steve Yedlin, a Director of Photography (most recently for Star Wars: The Last Jedi). There was a lot that even I found surprising, and I've been working in the field (VFX and animation) ...

Re: Watching poor quality videos using HDMI Input.

Someone may have mentioned this-- I haven't read the whole thread-- but the reason why 4x3 movies play correctly on Blu-ray is that the video file is 16x9 with black vertical bars (pillar boxing) on the left and right. On DVD the files for 4x3 are actually 4x3 and therefore the TV needs to be set co...

Re: Tinted TRIP TO THE MOON (1902) with new music scores!

I have a lot of FlickerAlley discs and I'm very happy with the quality and extras. I have their other Trip To The Moon and I really dislike the score on the color version, so I was initially happy to see this release announcement. But like others, when I investigated the other scores it was clear th...

Re: Cool Video Game Based on Silent Cartoons

There are apparently no plans for the Switch, but if you don't have an Xbox you can get it for Windows 10. (They've said they plan to do a Mac port, but who knows when that'll appear.) And it's only $20 though sometimes it gets discounted to $16 or $17.

"I repeat : MPEG4 IT'S A GARBAGE."

MPEG4 is a container. What codec do you mean? What bit rate?

And yes, there's a good chance all the TVs in the store looked bad. Stores usually split the signal to go to all the TVs, and that looks terrible.

Re: BenQ Announces New 4K Home Projector with 3D Support

1) It's the recent Lawrence restoration that I'm talking about-- that one was a few years ago.

2) Something must be seriously wrong to the theaters and TV where you are. I don't think anyone else on Nitrateville shares your experience.

3) Thanks for the Lawrence link! I'll take a look.

Re: BenQ Announces New 4K Home Projector with 3D Support

That restoration was several years ago. Generally speaking, 4K discs that are upconverted are not newer films, they're films that were made before digital cinematography and projection took over. For example, Titanic was 2k, as was the first Harry Potter (maybe the 2nd also). These days, Hollywood f...

"Just to remamber, MOST THEATER'S PROJECTOR TODAY ARE STILL 2K, AND MOST MOVIED MASTERED IN 2K. Some system in theater even have digital image artefacts here and there."

Maybe in your country. Not here. Here they're mostly 4k projectors. And no, most movies are NOT mastered in 2k.

Re: BenQ Announces New 4K Home Projector with 3D Support

I'm not sure I'd say "most." From what I know, the majority are 4k. Everything I've worked on for the past few years has been 4k. But even if a film was mastered in 2k, remastering at 4k lets you add HDR (depending on the source, naturally). Of course, 4k at home, other than for HDR, which isn't THA...

Re: The fallacy about 8bits and 10 bits

You are wrong. 8 bit has terrible banding, most noticeable in gradients. Since most people's monitors are 8 bit, you have to make a simulation, using dithering, to show how 10 bit can look. In the early 90s I was doing visual effects for a TV show and we had a lot of problems because everything was ...

The entire bottom right quarter is the live action portion. It's pretty much exactly divided like that. It's not rear projection though.
