Re: The Silent Era website shuts down

The entire site now works again, as long as you enter it anywhere other than the home page – which means all those backlinks are safe. :) There are new posts on the Facebook page too.

Re: The Silent Era website shuts down

It just doesn’t make any sense to spend the better part of two decades building Silent Era up to be the biggest silent film-specific database on the internet, only to then kill it completely. There are now several people, myself included, offering to facilitate hosting the final incarnation of the s...

Re: Animal Cruelty-No Animals Were Harmed

I won’t supply more examples of animal cruelty on film as the list goes on forever. And I hate it. It’s not possible to ‘like’ posts or threads here, so I’m just giving kudos to JFK for bringing the subject up.

Re: What do you want to know about a score?

I somehow managed to overlook your excellent score for The General , Rodney – added! I already considered Sherlock Jr. and Steamboat Bill, Jr. but could only find two custom scores for the former (Mont Alto and Club Foot Orchestras) and four for the latter (Alloy Orchestra ensemble, Lee Erwin organ,...

Re: Masterpieces You Don't Really Care For

Hmm. Interesting that a brief opinion, politely expressed, draws swift and lengthy rebuttals from all three active moderators, when so many instances of rudeness have, for whatever reason, gone unchecked... I too, favour certain old fashioned ideas, though to me they're new fashioned too. Namely: go...

Re: Blu-Ray upgrades of previously released titles

Your first point is basically down to your personal opinion and preference. But whichever you prefer, you're free to choose the version you watch. :) I didn't say colorization was dead. I said "effectively dead". That meant precisely allowing for the specific minor use examples you stated. The three...

Does anyone, perhaps living in the US, know Carl and can call him? I – we, I'm sure – can help with this and would very much like the opportunity to do so.

Re: Masterpieces You Don't Really Care For

I've just skimmed the last few pages and sexism, rudeness and trolling are, predictably, all too apparent. My site has chat forums which I've been a little slow in promoting thus far, but I will say this: none of those three will be tolerated – at all. There is an alternative. A question: does Nitra...

If you do a search you’ll find numerous references to Zeus and LtC in these forums. This article will provide a lot more info.
Quick answer: they’re both scammers, stay well away.

Re: The Silent Era website shuts down

It's only possible to navigate the archived site by using its internal links. As noted, site wide searching is no longer an option – unless someone has a method unbeknown to me. I'd love to hear of such a thing! Bookmark this link for the most recently archived version (April 9, 2016) of the site: h...

Re: Blu-Ray upgrades of previously released titles

Actually, a film transfer that's been zoomed in, cropped or simply in the wrong AR compromises the work itself and artistic intent by any objective criteria. And once it's been done, that's usually it : everyone's stuck with it, whether they like it or not. Unlike the fact that no one's forcing HD, ...

Re: Blu-Ray upgrades of previously released titles

This is a funny thread. A lot of it sounds like the complaints about colorization of old films – a practice which has been effectively dead for a whole decade, by the way, so let's not go there. People: you have a choice! Nobody is forcing you to watch any of these films or television programmes in ...

Re: The Silent Era website shuts down

Shocking news. I really hope it's not the end. I sent Carl a message yesterday but haven't had a reply yet. Alongside Wikipedia and IMDb, Silent Era ranks top for the largest number of silent film related search terms. That means an incalculable number of newly dead backlinks all over the internet. ...

Silent Film Competitions and Giveaways

I thought it'd be good to have a thread to post silent film related goodies that can be had for free, like DVDs, tickets for screenings, etc. I'll get the ball rolling: Charlie Chaplin Competition: Win Artificial Eye Blu-rays and DVDs! Two BFI Blu-ray/DVD Sets of Ken Russell’s Valentino Biopic to Be...

The General isn't far behind at five: Alloy Orchestra ensemble, Carl Davis orchestral, Joe Hisaishi orchestral, Lee Irwin organ, Robert Israel orchestral The Blue Grassy Knoll have also done an accompaniment to The General which I believe they were trying to get released via Kickstarter. I have the...

Re: What do you want to know about a score?

This sounds like an interesting project and I genuinely look forward to reading the results. Will you be posting a link here when it's completed? As for silents with the most custom scores on home video , it's easy to be specific, as long as we're talking about quality restored or preserved releases...

Maciste alpino was the main opening film at last year's Pordenone and it was rather brilliant – and beautiful looking. One of the most entertaining mid-period silents I've ever seen.

Re: Pirate and Bootleg Discs of Early Films

Shout! Factory, a home video label that specialises in releasing cult films and TV programmes, has just published a guide fairly similar to mine: Shout! Factory: Counterfeit / Bootleg Media FAQ I'm amazed, given how endemic this problem is, that more hasn't been written about it before now. Unless a...
