Re: BOAN (Photoplay) from Twilight Time in May

Flicker Alley had announced this a couple of years back in one of their calendars. Wonder what made them drop it. I was sort of surprised by this news as I also remembered that tentative Flicker Alley announcement. BOAN is not a title I would have expected from the company, but as far as I am conce...

Re: Harold Lloyd one reelers

Yes, such a release would indeed be very welcome. While all of Lloyd's 1920s work is by now thankfully available for anyone to see, his crucial development as a performer (and film-maker) from c. 1916-1919 remains sadly obscure by comparison. Hopefully the Lloyd estate, if no one else, will someday...

Re: King of Jazz on The Criterion Collection in March!

All right! The complaining has been going here here since at least 2012, about the lack of the film, the poor quality of the print, the sloth of the restoration, the fact that it's not playing at the poster's neighborhood house, to a lack of a blu-ray/dvd release. What are people going to complain ...

Re: Tom Sawyer (1938) archival status?

A few years back, Echo Bridge Entertainment (one of the bottom feeders of the DVD market) licensed some films from Disney, and somehow the Selznick Tom Sawyer was lumped in with all of the Ernest films. As expected, there is a DVD which isn't too bad if my memory is to be trusted. Then again, I foun...

Re: Good Films with Bad Titles?

How about "Christmas Holiday" (1944)? Based upon the title and the two leading players (Deanna Durbin and Gene Kelly) alone, I would assume that the movie would be a light-hearted, musical frolic. Instead, the movie is about as bleak as can be. Another misleading title is "In the Good Old Summertime...

Bobbi Shaw, Eddie Hodges, Irene Tsu, George Maharis, James Karen, and Norman Lloyd are all still around and could potentially be interviewed. I really don't see what Bogdanovich could do to top the masterful Brownlow documentary, but I'll take a look at it once it's available.

Youtv to show the silent version of "Mr. Robinson Crusoe"

Youtv is a cable channel that has an eclectic and frankly incoherent collection of programs. They do show some vintage films mostly late at night, and those films tend to be public domain fare in very battered prints. However, occasionally they do show what may called a gem in the rough, and tomorro...

Thanks, and I agree with you that something screwy is going on here. I do live in a warm/humid area of the country, and I'm wondering if perhaps the Fox and Warner discs might be more vulnerable due to those factors for some reason. The room that the discs are stored in isn't known for getting hot ...

Organ Score Credit Error on New "Steamboat Bill, Jr" blu-ray

I received both of Kino's new Keaton blu-ray offerings today, and I can confirm that the organ score on the Steamboat Bill, Jr disc is Gaylord Carter's legendary score (arguably one of the finest recorded scores for a silent) and not the Lee Erwin score as credited on the back cover art and menu scr...

Awful news all around. I'm probably at least somewhat younger than most people here (just turned 30 last year), but I remember cutting my silent movie teeth on many of Mr. Shepard's editions of various titles in the 1990s and early 2000s. As a novice film enthusiast I quickly learned that I could tr...

Re: What's The Last Silent Movie You Watched? [2017]

Through the Back Door (1921) - a weaker but nevertheless charming Mary Pickford vehicle. The plot strains plausibility (the character transformation of the stepfather for instance), and several plot elements are either poorly developed (Pickford's romance) or extraneous (the Belgian war orphans). Ye...
