Re: What is the number for on the Nitrateville window tab?

Bruce and Donald - that's because you two were seeing the number of non-active signups. Those were spammers that I deleted a day or two ago, so now it will only show a number if someone new signs up.

Re: Universal Pictures restores silent film, 1929’s "The Last Wa

I watched it a night or two ago as well. Agreed, it's definitely not the restoration - some parts are fairly bad, but certainly watchable and better than previously available. But yes indeed, it would be great to have the proper Universal restoration.

Does anyone know whether the soundtrack survives?

Well, as Ed Lorusso points out on the new podcast, they'll license public domain stuff that's professionally produced with scores-- sometimes. So get on that!

I've also bought two modified Oppo players from 220 Electronics. No complaints whatever; everything was ready to go, out of the box, and very easy to use. I'd recommend them to anyone who asks.

I don't collect posters and other paper, so I've not been in need of restoration work personally, but I'm impressed by the samples I see on Brian Anthony's website: http://www.anthonyrestorations.com/pages/ar_work_1.html Brian has been a friend of mine for over 35 years, and he also happens to be th...

Re: How to see only unread posts

We must have something different in our setups. I'm on Chrome, if that means anything. I hit "View New Posts" and everything that I've not read is visible on one page. That's how I've always done it, and it hasn't changed with the new board software (not for me, at least).

That's what I'm thinking too - I don't see the point. How does it differ from clicking each board's header to "show all posts"?

Speaking of which, I just wiped out another 6 signups, all from the last 15-20 minutes. That makes around 15 this morning. The guy is apparently insane; he never gives up even though we're here deleting as fast as we can.

It's been a difficult situation, thanks to a Russian spammer that doesn't give up. It's the same guy, over and over. There are 4 of us deleting posts; usually he signs up but doesn't post. Several days last week, I deleted around 100 signups per day, all from him. When Mike returns, we'll discuss so...

I'm not sure if the "view new posts" button is working perfectly. It appears to call up every single thread ever started on NV. Sorry, folks - that was probably my doing. Our neighborhood Russian spammer has been on a rampage, and I blocked a few of his IP addresses last night. The other things I notice:

1) "Mark All Posts Read" button is missing

2) I'm using Chrome, so I can't compare other browsers. Here, width is OK. Line spacing seems farther than before, but that may be a side effect of the larger font.

I did notice a cool feature at the top right of every topic's page, "View first unread post". That is very handy if you have been away for a while and there have been multiple replies to the topic.
Clicking the movie reel icon next to a topic (black on topics with new posts) will also do that.

Questions re: AT&T Uverse

Has anyone experienced issues recording from Uverse? In particular, recording TCM, PBS, etc to a DVR, then burning to DVD or blu-ray. Presently I'm on Comcast and haven't had any problems with this, and I'm looking into alternatives.

Re: Kino to release blu-rays/DVDs of some Paramount silents

I agree with your thoughts, Mike, and there are any number of titles that I don't actually want to own. I've got far too many here that have never been watched, for one thing. My point about streaming vs ownership, and I think we are in agreement here, is that I want to make the choice between them,...

Re: Kino to release blu-rays/DVDs of some Paramount silents

I don't like the idea of the rightsholders having even more control over the content. Want to watch that series/short/movie again at a later time? Too bad - it's gone. One of the primary reasons that I want a hard copy. Streaming has its place as a "preview" - watch it once, see whether you do or d...

A quick look at IMDB brought up a couple of tidbits: 1) The cast list shows JC as "Nanon" here too. I haven't looked at the DVD in ages - is that her name in the current version and not just in the old 9.5mm print? I have the cutting continuity, in which she's called "Estrellita", and I've always th...

Re: The Unknown (1927)

Before the discovery of the present version, there was a French 9.5mm cutdown, probably made in the late '20s along with those of a few other contemporary MGM silents. There were 16mm blowups floating around of that version, which was all that was known until the French 35mm print turned up. The 9.5...
