Re: November Star of the Month – Lon Chaney

Darn it, set my DVR to record the 1913 Lois Weber film Suspense , which is supposed to have Chaney in small role, one of his earliest, on TCM, and wound up with Where Are My Children? (which I've already seen) instead. Did anybody else see it? There is this copy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4no...

Re: November Star of the Month – Lon Chaney

I love Lon Chaney. I think he's a unique actor. He brings a lot of psychological reflection to whatever roles he does. It would have been wonderful to see his evolution as an actor, but so many of his early films are lost. I think having two deaf parents must have been the forge upon which his gifts...

Re: GOODWILL PICTURES

Thanks for alerting me to this picture. I did a search on ""GOODWILL PICTURES" movie company" and got this: ftp://digitalpreservation.gov/pub/mss/msspub/fa/k/krellbrg.txt It mentions a Goodwill Pictures that was established in 1941, I wonder if somewhere there is a connection? It mentions it as a fi...

Re: Ben Turpin short feature on TCM this Sunday.

Definitely one of the better physical comedies for Turpin and others in the film. The 2013 Alpha Video DVD for Home Entertainment (oldies.com) is narrated as well and better than the YT with Backus's narration. Perhaps Backus was popular voice the public would recognize when selected for this versi...

I gotta go with Mike. Welles didn't make it easy on himself.
I can see that, but he wouldn't have been the first genius to have problems in Hollywood.

Thoughts on Dick Cavett?

I have been watching Dick Cavett lately and i grew up on watching him quite a bit. I was wondering what others thought about him. One thing I noticed is how jibing he is and how often. It seems a good 30% of interviews have frequent little insulting jokes. I know he got his start as a comedy writer....

I have a dear friend who is deaf. Does Itunes allow CC? I know if you were to upload these to youtube, which probably takes about 30 seconds of copy/pasting per episode (if you don't count the time for the uploading), it has CC automatically generated.

Re: What is the last film you watched? (2018)

Born to be Wild (1938) is perhaps the first truck driver movie. It has that typical plot of needing to get to the destination on time. Two interesting characterizations of truck driver friends who get a strange offer. Interesting romantic twist. Had some good footage of early big trucking technology...

I think that there is only one known source for The Unknown (1927) (famously, it was discovered on the shelves of the Cinematheque Française, misfiled as an unknown film) so the difference is probably attributable to a difference in projection speed. I wonder if the word "unknown" was just the titl...

Re: What is the last film you watched? (2018)

There is a nice copy of The Sun Shines Bright (1953 John Ford) on YT. Very much enjoyed it, very powerful. I wouldn't call it Capraesque but it does have some elements of that. A character against all odds wins out. It's kind of like a Western theme in this way, but a little more mainstreet USA.

Butlers

Which films had a predominant role of butlers? I've been thinking about the use of butlers lately, thinking that perhaps this generation aren't able to continue that tradition. People are not as trustworthy nor as humble. It seems people would rather go homeless than be someone's servant for a room ...

You might alert them to the intrigue surrounding the major lost silent horror films, like London After Midnight. This would turn them on to the great excitement that surrounds finding lost silent films.

Re: I’m teaching a class on silent horror!!

I would go with Jekyll and Hyde. It's extremely well known, and people like that. Not everyone is keen on expanding their repertoire of obscure films. Also, I see it as more a tale of the dubious quest to find superhuman abilities from substance abuse. As we know, opium, cocaine, and hemp was used f...

Enjoyed this very much. Eileen Percy was gorgeous and really held the character well of a noble young woman trying to do the best for everyone she could.
