Re: National Film Registry 2018

Thanks for alerting us to this again.

I had to restart my submission when I realized we could nominate up to 50 films!

By the way I added the Lost Generation film THE LAST FLIGHT (1931) and Borzage's HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT (1937) which I didn't see on the list or among the suggestions.

I get 10 a month from the New York City public library. I imagine that the library itself sets the rules since they seem to vary.

Thanks Ben! I wonder if we could see MY PET with a score somehow (hint hint)?

ETA: I bought the DVD above with the shorts you mention and they are very entertaining. Thanks for the great job as usual.

Thanks!

Weren't some other Baby Peggy shorts discovered the last couple of years? I wonder if they can be made ready to broadcast with a score for TCM.

Re: Streaming via Library Card

I've had Kanopy for a year or so and it's still adding new films.

Tonight I watched "Dawson City: Frozen Time" which I didn't know they had included. I already purchased it on Google and Blu-ray but I loved seeing it all over again. Great chance to see it if you have the library card.

Mike and all the mods, first of all thanks for taking care of the upgrade. I only notice one thing. I am viewing on an iPad Air just upgraded to IOS 11.4.1. When I hold the tablet horizontally in both Chrome and Safari, everything looks great. When I turn the tablet to view vertically however, the b...

Re: TCM via cable vs. Filmstruck

Mike it looks like you have your needs met, but just to contribute in general, I dropped cable in February and am now using YouTubeTV, which has a great variety of channels including TCM. I got it at $35 a month, no fees added (I think it’s now $40) and my grandfathered Spectrum internet is $41.95. ...

Re: Extraordinary Film Artefacts You've Seen

In late 2013 I went to a preview of a Bonham's auction of Hollywood memorabilia in New York City, I think there was a TCM connection of some kind. I tried to locate some of the photos I took last night but at the moment I can only find these of the film artefacts: Sam Spade's chair, with a notice no...

Re: Research about silent cinema fans - Silent film festival

This was a long time ago, but I first became a silent film fan by attending the Silent Clowns series at the 8th Street Playhouse in New York (then also known for repeat showings of the Rocky Horror Show) which showed an extensive series of features by Keaton, Chaplin and Lloyd. There was musical acc...

Re: The 4 hour "Greed" coming to TCM (4/15/18)

Does YouTube TV work with AnyVideoConverter? On this film, I want the regular version. The reconstruction is a tough schlog. Not as bad as the reconstructed Mad Mad Mad Mad World, but close. I end up irritated by both of them. (or asleep) Sorry bigshot , I don't know the answer to your question. I ...

Re: The 4 hour "Greed" coming to TCM (4/15/18)

Maybe this belongs in the Tech thread, but if you live in an area they support, you can subscribe to Youtube TV for $35 a month and record late night TCM films that way on their cloud DVR. It works over Roku and some new smart TVs. I recorded a late night Baby Peggy short last weekend and it came ou...

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to Kino, and to Mike and everyone at Nitrateville for keeping this annual event going! I've always gotten so much out of it, both from seeing a new film each year and reading about everyone else's discoveries as well.

Re: What is the last film you watched? (2018)

Rewatched one of my favorite pre-code movies, Liliom , the 1930 version directed by Frank Borzage. Remade in 1934 with Boyer and as Carousel in the 50s I've always considered the Borzage film as the best treatment, (There was a silent in 1919 but I've never been able to see that.) The real plus for...

Re: 10th Annual Watch That Movie Night is January 26!

Evangeline (1929) is a beautiful late silent, eloquent in its direction, as well as in Dolores del Rio’s fine performance. I was aware of the tragic history of the Acadians forced off their land but didn’t know too much else about this film except that del Rio did sing in it. I do think that singin...

By the way I just wanted to add that I've watched the film repeatedly and love it more each time. Between the images and the music - which I have come to really like - and the sense of lost film and history I think it's become one of my favorite films ever. I have also bought the Blu-ray and am look...

I couldn't help notice the wind-up cars and fire truck on the round table at 0:55-1:05, I had a windup Mickey Mouse driving a car with his hand out to make a turn and he'd go around in a circle just like that (this was during the Mickey Mouse club era, I was about 4 and got it for Christmas).
