Re: LA Park Silent Film Locations

Hope you have a fun visit - John Hi John, I brought a hard copy of one of your tours with me, but with only 1.5 days, including work, I didn't get a chance to do much. I like to get out there somewhat often, so hopefully I can get something scheduled soon and take advantage of your always impressiv...

Re: LA Park Silent Film Locations

If you are familiar with Chaplin Keystones, you shouldn’t have any trouble recognizing scenes at the northeast corner of Echo Park Lake. And not too many blocks north on Glendale Blvd. you can see parts of the Keystone Studio now masquerading as a storage facility behind a Jack In the Box fast food...

LA Park Silent Film Locations

Are there any recognizable silent film locations in LA area parks (Echo, MacArthur, etc.)? I will be in the area for a couple of days and would love to see something familiar, but I'm sure with growth and the changing landscape it may be a challenge. Due to limited time I won't be able to do much re...

Re: Need Advice Regarding Film Reels

Anything could be on those nitrate reels OR absolutely nothing. I personally would spend $25 for each reel to find out before they become.............................. dust. It is a bit like buying a cracker jack box as a kid, if you get the prize you were after it was all worth it. Dana I thought ...

Re: Kickstarter to release "Kidnapped" (1917)

I really enjoyed this, thank you for your hard work - it certainly paid off! I've often wondered what it would be like to see "a night at the movies" as an audience did back in the silent days, and now I can say I did!

Re: Charley Chase: The Hal Roach Talkies Volume One 1930-31

Hello! Are there any specific DVD collections that you would recommend? I see that Kino has 2 volumes. YES, order those two sets - they are fantastic. I am a huge fan of all his work, but in my opinion nothing beats his silent films and these two collections offer some of his best. https://www.amaz...

Re: Need Advice Regarding Film Reels

The second to the last photo looks a bit scary as the film can is rusted through, but depends what the film inside looks like. Where in the US are these films located? Sadly, I was unable to open that one. It was a rusty mess. The store is located in Kansas City, MO. ...although unlikely to be anyt...

Need Advice Regarding Film Reels

During a recent visit to an antique store I found around five or six reels of film. As I started sorting through them, I realized a couple were in rough condition. I asked the owner of the store if I could go through them to see what she had. She said I could, explaining she got them from an estate ...

Re: Why You Should Watch Silent Movies With Your Kid

I’ve posted this elsewhere on Nitrateville, but it seems particularly appropriate for this string. I got both my children reading at a young age by putting them in my lap and watching Chaplin and Keaton shorts. I’d stop the videos on the intertitles and had them read them out loud. At first they ne...

Why You Should Watch Silent Movies With Your Kid

I don't think this has been posted here yet (I've been on vacation and haven't checked in much lately), but below is a link to a short article about watching silent films with your child. We often discuss how to get younger people into silent films, and this is certainly a good start. Here is what I...

Re: American Slapstick vol 2 - re-available!

...If only some "new old stock" copies of volume one would resurface! I kept a close eye on Amazon for a reasonably priced copy. Last year one surfaced for $14.99 and I jumped on it. It came from the UK and was in very good condition. I did the same thing with the Harry Langdon Lost and Found set. ...

Re: Win Doug Fairbanks in The Half-Breed from Kino Lorber!

COQUETTE(1929): Complete prints of the film still exist. In the 1990s it was restored by the Library of Congress and The Mary Pickford Institute. Coquette was released on home video in the 1990s. Pickford's estate no longer owns the rights as another studio bought the film for a never-made remake. ...

Re: Win Doug Fairbanks in The Half-Breed from Kino Lorber!

I love all things Fairbanks, so this is very hard to do! However, I think I will go with THE GAUCHO because I first saw it at the Kansas Silent Film Festival and was simply amazed from the first frame to the last. It was also a real treat watching it with an audience who seemed to really appreciate ...

Re: Ou Est Filibus

The response depended on the audience member: some found it primitive and low budget (which it is) and others found it fascinating and audacious (which it also is). I enjoy it quite a lot, myself. I attended the Kansas SFF and thought the film was great fun. To me it didn't feel primitive and low b...

Amazon does have the MGM "Babes in Toyland". I have it; it is packaged as "March of the Wooden Soldiers", but has the original title. Quality is gorgeous.
