Oboy! What I love about the silents is that no matter how many I have seen, there are still more to discover.

Ella Cinders blu-ray

I see that Grapevine has a new 2K upgrade of Ella Cinders on DVD and Blu-ray. Yay! Does anyone know if this is from the same source material?

Re: Shiraz BFI restoration

I just got my BFI copy of Shiraz and watched it. WOW! Even though we are only into March, for me this may be the silent release of the year. The print quality is so stunning, my jaw dropped at the first scenes. It looks as if had been shot yesterday. Having seen so many bad prints over the years, al...

Re: 10th Annual Watch That Movie Night is January 26!

So I got six times the dose of Lloyd Hamilton this weekend with a new DVD collection of his shorts. They were all great to watch. It is a shame that he is not better known by the masses who think of silent comedy as only Chaplin, Lloyd, and Keaton. The real gem in this collection is HIS MUSICAL SNEE...

Re: 10th Annual Watch That Movie Night is January 26!

Ohhh, so many choices. I'm narrowing it down to two options that I just got in. Either the new Lloyd Hamilton Kickstarter collection -- or the Filmmuseum edition of The Joyless Street. How is that for contrast?

Re: Good book about an "atmospheric" theater

It's always great news to hear about a book about a historic theatre. Thanks for the heads-up on the Marion Palace. I spent a good amount of time researching the atmospherics when I was working on my book on Houston movie theatres (Cinema Houston, UT press). Eberson’s first atmospheric was the Houst...

Re: FREE Lot of 18 VHS Silents

Hi Michael. It's nice to hear from you. So sorry, but the post on the VHS tapes was from a year ago. No one ever expressed an interest so I finally gave them to Goodwill. I'm pleased to see your interest in silence. A few of Gances films are still available. Torture of silence is available through G...

Re: Silent Clips in The Cinema Show

I submitted this question back in 2012 in the hopes someone might be able to identify this footage. I figured it's worth another try. These are clips from an early silent comedy, possibly French, that was used as part of a Genesis live concert film. Here are some screen caps of the footage. Does any...

FREE Lot of 18 VHS Silents

I'm looking for a warm, loving home for 18 VHS videotapes, mostly from Grapevine, all in great shape and mostly played once. A majority of them are silents, except for a couple that have silent actors in them. If you cover the shipping costs, they are yours for FREE. I'd rather see them go to someon...

It looks like the George Eastman site no longer has the streaming videos they once had (unless I am looking in the wrong place). I had hoped to b able to see TRAIL OF THE LONESOME PINE (DeMille, 1916) as part of a local research project. The lead actress, Charlotte Walker hailed from Galveston (I li...

I can see them on one machine, which also does it on at least one manufactured disc from a label whose owner posts here, and does some quirky things in other areas too. So it's an issue that exists, yes... under certain, relatively rare and machine-specific apparently, circumstances. So don't drag ...

Re: Watch That Movie Night 2014— Win Kino Releases

I managed to squeeze two movies in. First off was F.W. Murnau’s City Girl. I had previously seen this a few years ago from the Grapevine release. The new version, part of the Murnau Borzage Fox boxed set, is a pristine transfer, and is a beauty to watch. Mary Duncan is wonderful in the film, and it ...

Re: Are the Alpha Video silents worth purchasing?

It is sad that the Alpha titles tend to be of a lower quality, since they have some interesting titles. I have the Lupino Lane DVD and as expected, the quality suffers. Some of the shorts are more watchable than others, but none are stellar. However, it is still Lupino Lane, who is a wonder to watch...

Thanks. That makes it a bit more difficult for a casual viewing. The clips that were shown were brief, however they looked amazing. I would dearly love to see the whole film.
