Re: Ben Turpin short feature on TCM this Sunday.

I tried watching this, but couldn’t stand it. I have always hated these mocking re-dos of old silent films that I find very disrespectful of the originals.

Re: Kevin Brownlow's HOLLYWOOD on Amazon Prime

I hate this term, but for lack of a better, this series is still #1 on my bucket list to buy, if the powers that be ever come to their senses and put it out on Disc. I’d probably even buy a 4K machine to play it if that was the only format!

Re: The colorized NINOTCHKA

I guess it would be too expensive for the market, but whenever I hear colonization mentioned, I always think of those early musicals from the dawn of sound, for which we only have black and white prints. I’d love to see “On With The Show” or “Sally” in colour. There are actually short snippets of co...

Re: Revolving Doors in Movies

They are a standard feature in many buildings new or old in the Toronto/Buffalo area. Usually not always found in suburban or mall areas, but most multi-storied hotels and stores still have them at street level. I certainly would never think of them as an old fashioned relic or rarity.

My mother was watching this last movie by herself in the living room when I was about 20 (47 years ago!). I was up on my room. When I came downstairs I found her frozen to her chair unable to move! This is the best version of “The Turn of The Screw”!

Western New York Movie Expo

For the second year in a row, we will be attending this movie festival in Buffalo NY. It has the usual mix of venders and classic movies with silents accompanied by live music. It is a lot of fun, is labour day weekend and well worth checking out. I will report back after attending.

Depending on where you live, this may not be possible for you. We live about 1 hour from Niagara Falls, where we go about twice a month. We rent a P.O. box at the main Niagara Falls US post office for about $35 US every 6 months. Here we receive all my orders from Amazon.com, Amazon.uk, and Warner A...

Re: Excess Baggage (1928) Lost film with William Haines Exis

It is my understanding that due to the expense of converting to sound, ytheatres only would convert to one system. This meant that films made by other studios had to provide Vitaphone prints to theatres that were Vitaphone only even if that was not the system used in their studio, if they wanted the...

Re: What is the last film you watched? (2018)

Since we are talking about very recent films, my wife and I just watched “Phantom Thread” (2017). We must be very out of touch with what is generally considered a good movie, because we basically thought it was crap. Here you have a very boring story populated with 3 or 4 very unpleasant and uninter...

Re: Talking Pictures Stars Who Never Appeared in Colour

I had heard that many of the biggest stars of the 1930s had in their contract that they could’t be forced to make a colour picture. Color movies were considered frivolous and the process a gimmick to boost the box office for poor movies. Dramatic stars feared it would ruin their reputation.

Re: Charley Chase: The Hal Roach Talkies Volume One 1930-31

Every time we watched Laurel and Hardy or Our Gang on tv, my mother (born in 1920) would say “where is Charlie Chase — he was our favorite. I had never seen one of his full shorts although 1930s comedies and musicals are my favorite and I have an extensive disc collection. This was why I was anxious...

Walmart.com is easy to order from. We live close to the border, and ordered the Magnavox DVD recorders to the closest Walmart. We often vacation in the US, so we arranged to do a pick up when we stayed 2 nights so any duty would not apply

Walmart still offers the Magnavox DVD recorder on line. I have 2 of these. They each have a hard drive for editing, and they make burning a DVD idiot simple. I made my own copy of the restored agreed the last time TCM ran it.

Re: When actors muff their lines

I know that Vitaphone recordings could not be edited, so rather than re-do an entire 15 minute take, small flubs were forgiven if they were small enough. Also it was time consuming and expensive to set up for another take. Weren’t most of the early talkies cast with people from the live stage who we...
