Re: INFLUENZA 1918 - American Experience

Fox closed their studios as well, but Henry Lehrman was given permission to keep his Fox Sunshine studios open and functioning because he was so far behind schedule. The West Coast in general was better able to deal with the pandemic when it finally reached their shores, having learned from the mist...

Re: Ep. 15: Author Vanda Krefft on William Fox

Thanks for the clarifications, Vanda. I asked for (and received) your book for Christmas, so as soon as I'm finished reading about John Wayne I'll dive into your biography. As the author of MR. SUICIDE: HENRY "PATHE" LEHRMAN AND THE BIRTH OF SILENT COMEDY, I look forward to reading whatever you have...

Online Newspaper Archives

Not sure where to post this, so it's here. For those of you with experience with any of the online newspaper archives, what are the pluses and minuses of each? I'm thinking of Newspaperarchive.com and Newspapers.com, but perhaps there's another source (aside from the Library of Congress' Chronicling...

Re: Ep. 15: Author Vanda Krefft on William Fox

Another great interview, Mike, and I look forward to reading Vanda Krefft's bio. I'd like to correct one misleading comment made by her, however, and that was that there have been no previous bios about William Fox. I have four of them on my shelf, the earliest (and perhaps the very first ever publi...

Lantern site issues

Has anyone else had problems with this site today? It worked fine yesterday, but attempts at simple searches today return the dreaded " ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid in CatalogController#index " message. I guess I'll go do something else and return later when it's back up and functioning correctly ...

#13 would be Consuela Henley, aka Connie Henley. She starred in a number of Century Comedies in 1920.

Re: Please ID These 32 Silent Era Folks

Like a bad penny, she keeps showing up! Leigh's volatile temper and seeming inability to restrain herself led to many clashes with first husband Henry Lehrman, requiring numerous moves and calls to the police to intercede. When he finally filed for a restraining order and divorce, the many instances...

#2 is Peggy Aarup, not Peggy Pearce. Aarup starred in some L-Ko comedies in 1919. #4 is Merta Sterling, also an L-Ko star from 1917-1919. #9 is Eva Novak, at L-Ko as well from 1917-1919. #17, Dot Farley, was with L-Ko briedfly in 1919 before switching over to Century. #21 is Carolyn Wright, yet anot...

Re: Please ID These 32 Silent Era Folks

"Phil" was Phil Dunham, a British-born comedian who got his start in film at Universal, and within a few years became one of L-Ko's star comedians and occasional director. With L-Ko's demise he starred in a few Century, Henry Lehrman, and Jack White comedies before moving into smaller roles in featu...

Re: JOSH'S SUICIDE (1911) now streaming on MoMA

I think that Lehrman was with Carl Laemmle's IMP at this time. There's a gap in Lehrman's known roles in front of the camera at Biograph from THE BLIND PRINCESS AND THE POET (08/17/1911) and IOLA'S PROMISE (03/14/1912) when it appears that he was directing at IMP. His one known film there, BEAT AT H...

Stuntman Harvey Parry

I'm looking at an 07/02/1983 article from TV Guide titled "In 1919, he walked off a four-story building" by Frank Bies about stuntman Harvey Parry. In it he says Ron Yates, a Chicago Tribune editor, was researching Parry's life for a biography. Does anyone know if this ever came to fruition? I've do...

Good news, I guess. Charles is now putting together the Winter 2017 issue.
