Re: Win Pioneers: First Women Filmmakers from Kino Lorber

Girlfriends directed by Claudia Weill. It's not only an excellent film, but is a special favorite of mine because I was a film student back in the 1970's, and some of us from the School of Visual Arts got to visit the set. I met Eli Wallach that day. I was also asked to be an extra during the art g...

THE STATUE OF LIBERTY SHOT IN "THE IMMIGRANT"

Please don't pile on if this is deemed to be a stupid, obvious, or overly simplistic question, but this is something that has been bugging me ever so slightly for the past 50 years. Why did Chaplin use the shot, which is obviously stock footage, of the Statue of Liberty that was filmed from a boat t...

Re: Jackie Coogan (1914-1984) - One Hundred Years In Film

I thought it was interesting, and probably a tip of the derby to Coogan's work with Chaplin, that one of the earliest episodes of THE ADDAMS FAMILY was titled "Fester's Punctured Romance."

Re: Silents to sound - academic research

academia dot edu is a platform that hosts scholarly papers that have been uploaded by users. There is a search function with a category for Silent Film and a number of related sub-topics, including Early Sound Film. Here is one paper that came up after a quick search. I hope this is more helpful tha...

Re: Silents to sound - academic research

One succinct reason comes to mind - having to learn lines. In the silent days, actors could get away with saying anything, but the thought of having to actually learn a whole heap of dialogue may have been too much for some of them. Greetings, Mr. Binks. One might think that this would have posed a...

Re: Silents to sound - academic research

Wasn't there also an "out with the old, in with the new" attitude among the ticket-buying public? As sound represented a new paradigm, I've read that audiences wanted to see new, fresh faces on screens that could now talk. Is this just more untrue nonsense, rumor, and innuendo? However, I even seem ...

This is a good book, although it is also old. It's not written by an academic, but by a British film critic:

Re: The different types of Intertitles.

The End was omitted because of its an obvious one. I figured that the Main Title would be an obvious one as well, hence my questioning of your omission of "The End." I still maintain that the only ones in your list that can accurately be called intertitles are those other than the Main, End, and Cr...

Do the main title and credit titles even count as "intertitles?"

What about the one that states "The End?" That isn't on your list.
