Re: The Ancient Law (1923) E.A. Dupont: Flicker Alley preord

The image quality on the BluRay is quite satisfyingly sharp and well graded as to grey scale. The acting and story are quite intense, and one can see how this inspired the Jazz Singer . The klezmer violin throbs a bit relentlessly for the ghetto scenes, but it is responsive to the story. Sosin's pia...

Re: Kino to release blu-rays/DVDs of some Paramount silents

Manhandled and Stage Struck both arrive a couple of hours ago. Neither seems to have been subject to any digital restoration. Manhandled is scanned from a dupey and scratchy print. Stage struck offers a much better viewing experience from a really nice old Eastman House nitrate print it would appea...

Re: Question about Paul Fejos "Broadway" 1929

It's also interesting to note the Broadway miniature set with tracks for moving cars and a giant astride which was also recycled for King of Jazz.

In an interview Mohr recalled using the crane for every movie he made after Broadway.

Re: LONG AWAITED "KING OF JAZZ" RESTORATION BEGINS IN 2012

Although it's a bit uneven as to musical interest and source quality, much of it is simply brilliant both as a quirky snapshot of the time and as a painstaking restoration. Some sections must look better in a BluRay scanned from the two-strip negatives than they did originally. Ferde Grofe's arrange...

Re: KING OF KINGS Restoration Trailer

According to the booklet that came with the French package, the score for the 1927 version consists of "musical slections and compositions by Hugo Riesenfeld, adapted, arranged and conducted by Robert Israel." Well played and recorded as well. Looks great and I'm very happy with the restoration.

Re: The quality of repertory showings and home theaters

While the discussion here is mainly about buildings, I have to say that audiences for silent films can be terrible. The amount of inappropriate laughing has spoiled virtually every photoplay drama i have attended. I remind people that all movies should be silent...or at least all audiences.

Re: Enter to win Beggars of Life and Variete from Kino Class

Just watched the Kino Variete release and have to say that the Berklee Silent Orchestra score sounds even better than in the live performance that I reviewed here in May of 2016: https://www.classical-scene.com/2016/05/04/run-silents-run-deep/" target="_blank "Berklee Silent Film Orchestra (BSFO) .....

Re: VARIETE - ALLOY ORCHESTRA'S NEW SCORE

It was announced last night at the Coolidge Square Theater that the Berklee Silent Orchestra would be recording a score for Kino's release of Variete . I can testify after a showing that it works. Timeless and or period sounding and very attentive to rhythm and mode, it enhanced rather than fought t...

Re: Restored version of VARIETÉ (1925) on Bluray and DVD

Agreed that Tiger Lillies' score is an embarrassment for the Murnau Stifftung. Maybe they can expand the perfectly OK Peter Kleinschmidt performance on a 1929 Welte theater organ that comes with the 13-minute-shorter and no so good looking American version.
