Re: FRITZ LANG SILENT BLU BOX from Kino

If they were adding an extra 5 or 6 frames per second to The Big Sleep you'd notice it. It's just as absurd to add frames to a silent film, and is a desecration of the art form. No, I don't go looking for this stuff - extra frames alter the smoothness of the film, any s...

Re: FRITZ LANG SILENT BLU BOX from Kino

Well, I guess I've never seen a silent film then. I didn't say anyone never SAW one, I said they don't know what they're supposed to look like, which you apparently don't - I started to watch Kino's DVD of A Cottage on Dartmoor last night and within five seconds I knew something was wrong - I pause...

Re: FRITZ LANG SILENT BLU BOX from Kino

Basically correct. They do it to slow down the film, so dramas don't play at Keystone Kops speed. I think it's often unnoticeable, others think it sticks out like a sore thumb. It's NEVER unnoticeable, if you know what a silent film is supposed to look like - amazing that Olive Films could release ...

Re: Tinted TRIP TO THE MOON (1902) with new music scores!

I'm not opposed to different types of music either. But it appears they are choosing random techno musicians who have absolutely no idea how to go about accompanying a film. It looks like they create a whole bunch of music based on impressions of moods and situations, then they wallpaper stuff over...

Re: INFLUENZA 1918 - American Experience

This was in 2015, and killed 800 in USA. Not even close to the 1918 influenza. One hundred years later, hospital emergency rooms and immediate care centers are overflowing with people who have caught the particularly strong flu that's hitting people all over the country. The flu vaccine has done li...

Re: Tinted TRIP TO THE MOON (1902) with new music scores!

It's not just ATTTMoon . You do get two more Melies shorts, plus an hour-long documentary on the restoration of the film. The Dorian Pimpernel track is likely to be experimental music, but I don't know how you guys can complain about the other two tracks without hearing them. Anyone who has a 'DJ' ...

Re: Tinted TRIP TO THE MOON (1902) with new music scores!

I passed on the first release of this because it only had the one garbage score - I sense that two out of the three here are too but the piano score with narration should be a winner, and so I'll probably pop for this one. Confirmed - Jeff Mills and Dorian Pimpernel have no business 'scoring' a sile...

Re: 1930-?? silent moviemaking

The Czech film Tonka of the Gallows from 1930 has a synchronized soundtrack that does have two brief passages of the title character singing but no dialogue - I forget if it had sound effects but of course it does have a recorded score.

Re: Dust Off That VCR, a Cinema Chain Is Starting to Rent VH

I still have a VHS and Beta tape decks and a laserdisc player - _ enjoy copying things digitally and spiffing them up. As far as resolution on VHS tapes - or Beta I would presume - there's this gadget called the Farroudja VP100 TV Enhancer that's a line doubler with sharpness and delay controls, the...

Re: KING OF KINGS Restoration Trailer

Yes, the restoration looks good, but it's still one of the most absurd silent films I ever saw, and to me represents not only the worst of deMille but the worst of silent era Hollywood - and for the record I thought so back in my religious days as well.

If you want notoriously bad scoring efforts, here's one that's at the bottom of my list: http://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=42&v=spzB-75gu7Y http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spzB-75gu7Y A theatre in the middle of Michigan's lower peninsula used to have live silent film screenings and would alw...

Re: What is the last film you watched? (2017)

Watched GAY PURR-EE from 1962... holds up rather well today. I didn't think it held up at all - Chuck Jones didn't have the sensibilities for feature length animation, it was all way too cartoony in the 6-minute Bugs Bunny sense. I don't remember how it was in this film specifically but at the end ...
