Re: Thoughts on Dick Cavett?

I enjoyed Mr. Cavett back in the day, but for some reason I find the TCM/MGM promo featuring his voice a litteral turn-off. In that, I turn it off, or change the channel, etc. His voice is smarmy/unctuous to me in that promo.

Re: Advice on a multi-region DVD player or Blu-ray

The following is not specific to multi-region players:

I've had several brand-new discs that refused to play at all, two just recently. I carefully washed them with liquid soap and water; dried them carefully (swiping from the center out), and they then played fine.

If Criterion has a fall “Flash” sale, it is likely to be in early October. We have time now to check our wish list and finances. If you have purchased directly from Criterion before, you may have some Credits/Loyalty Points to use toward purchases. Here are the dates of earlier Criterion fall sales:...

Re: What is the last film you watched? (2018)

Gary Busey has always seemed a little nutty to me and certainly not an actor whose work I've followed very closely, but he gives an astonishing performance as Buddy Holly in the 1978 biopic, a really low-budget film directed by Steve Rash. I can't say I really remember Holly (or his death) from the...

Re: Kickstarter to release "Kidnapped" (1917)

Looking forward to getting this! Here's a review (or, more likely, a press release) of the program that appeared in the Fairmont West Virginian on September 28, 1917. The films were running at the Nelson Theater that day. (Side note: The Nelson was supposedly at 314 Main Street. When I Googled, not...

Re: What is the last film you watched? (2018)

Peck is someone that everyone in the audience instinctively likes, trusts, and admires ... again, a visceral reaction to his physical appearance. This sort of unflashy charisma could mislead a lot of people into thinking Peck was a good, even great, actor. To me, he is possibly the most wooden and ...

Re: Murphy Beds

Adding to what Bob said… I recently saw a Murphy Bed in a documentary. (and I've already forgotten the name*) I decided not to report it. Murphy beds are real, and they could show up in any documentary, so it's not as interesting as a comic gag or "making a point" in a film. * Now I remember. A Fren...

I watched some of the Audrey Totter films on TCM today. I never saw her play such a sweet innocent as in The Cockeyed Miracle . She's a girl from my hometown of Joliet, Illinois; as is the fellow pictured next to her. He was an actor also: https://s19.postimg.cc/v9hu7gabz/Audrey_Totter_Larry_Parks.j...

At about an hour into the movie, a Murphy bed is pulled down, after Ginger Rogers' date leaves the apartment she shares with other women.
