Re: The Official Talkies online deals thread

I just tried it for the Bergman collection (just for fun) and it's no longer valid. In any case, one can look at it as getting ahead (in terms of pre-orders, so long as our orders are honored) rather than saving. The code only allowed us to apply the flash sale deal to pre-orders that I believe will...

Re: The Official Talkies online deals thread

While this does indeed work, I will keep my fingers crossed my orders don't get cancelled or, worse, that the pre-orders I applied the discount to won't be charged anew at full price (since pre-orders are supposed to be exempt from flash sales). Hopefully, those that take advantage won't see anythi...

Re: The Official Talkies online deals thread

I don't know how or why this is happening, but . . . Last night, in anticipation of a 50% off flash sale at Criterion.com this week, I was trying several order combinations in my shopping cart on the website. Then, for the heck of it, I decided to play with several old promo codes to see if they wo...

After your first pick, I vote for Lon Chaney (Sr.) given the time of year. Or perhaps deeper cuts like Peter Lorre or Bela Lugosi.

Does the festival have a shop online, or only in person? I looked on their website, but didn't find anything indicating what they might have for sale.
It's on their shop site. The Ruan Ling-yu DVDs are near the bottom: http://silentfilm.aeous.net/shop.php

Re: Ruan Ling-yu and Chinese Silent Cinema (1922–1935)

I'd never heard of Ruan Ling-yu prior to seeing Stanley Kwan's biopic Centre Stage , starring Maggie Cheung, in the early '90s at the Toronto International Film Festival. It might even have been under it's alternate title Actress at that point. The film included a few tantalizing glimpses of the re...

Flicker Alley recently released a 2K restoration (via 16mm elements) of Carl Mayer's marvelous BERLIN, SYMPHONY OF A GREAT CITY on MOD Blu-Ray. It's also currently on sale on the FA website for $19.95. Link: https://www.moviezyng.com/810162037246.aspx https://images2.static-bluray.com/movies/covers/...

...Or the Three Stooges remake. I thought the comedy movie was kind of fun. It did a decent job of presenting the characters in a modern context. That 3 Stooges docudrama was abysmal though. I think my problem is that I love the characters. I don't want to see the angst they went through off screen...

Twilight Time announced that they are putting the release of this title on hold pending the outcome of the Disney buy-out of Fox. Just a heads-up we have decided to postpone for the time being our upcoming blu-ray release of John Ford's classic, THE IRON HORSE (1924). We face an uncertain future wi...

I will go see this without hesitation, but I am really not digging the soap opera vibe I am picking up. Granted, not every biopic can be done as artfully and skillfully as Attenborough's CHAPLIN , but my fingers are crossed. I think it's incredible this kind of biopic is even happening. I do hope it...

I hope the perpetrator of this crime (whomever the slippers were seized from) got badly punished. I'm all for films about heists, but carrying out such schemes in the real world, especially with something like this, is despicable.

I'm more impressed with the amount of restorations of silents in recent years, far outpacing the number of such films (particularly feature-length) getting a release. To be fair, poor sales are no excuse for Criterion to sit on their treasure trove of Lloyd's filmography year after year. I'm quite d...

TCM's Summer Under the Stars Harold Lloyd Day has certainly given me the chance to visit some old friends. It's a positive thing to see THE COVERED WAGON , THE ANCIENT LAW , YOU NEVER KNOW WOMEN , KING OF JAZZ, and a few others get released, like the Swansons (even though the print used for MANHANDLED was not the best possible option, but alas). Unfortunate news regarding the possibility of KINO getting to release the 4K restoration of THE MAN WHO LAUGHS:
We asked for The Man Who Laughs which we had released in our old Universal deal, but didn't get it.
