Thanks for posting this, Steve, and for your great notes. And thank you, Bob Lipton, for your kind comments. Re: When to start the accompaniment?

Hi Robert! I suppose if you played entrance music, exit music would be appropriate. I only play entrance (audience load in) music for a few shows (not necessarily silent film shows, however). Even so, I rarely play exit music. As far as the audience appreciating the hard work, should that come as pa...

Re: When to start the accompaniment?

Conversely, and slightly off topic, I've heard at least one particular (contemporary) musician play well past the ending of the film. I'm not talking a few seconds, but rather more like a minute. This is clearly done to allow the house lights to come up and spur the audience into applause: the end r...

Re: Double feature: Sparrows & The Black Pirate

I was going to express doubts that two A pictures would have been played together back then, but then I read... 90 years ago today, May 14, 1926, Sid Grauman held a double premiere of the latest films by two of his favorite stars - husband and wife, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. Mary Pickfor...

I had the pleasure to playing these for a packed house at the Academy of motion Picture Arts & Sciences Jan 11. Great films. Great audience. Working with the Academy os always an exciting time. I'm glad they're back into showing silents again! The films were wonderful, BTW. Clara was at the top of h...

Re: Going for a new (documented) world's record...

That's certainly something the others here can address. For me, it's usually my back that goes first after a few hours. Rarely do I get pain in my arms or hands. A few years ago I had both hands operated on for carpel tunnel. Prior to that it was debilitating. Since the surgery they've been painless...

Re: Going for a new (documented) world's record...

Great story, Robert, and no doubt people have played much longer than the proposed 9 hours, but not documented by the Guinness folks, so we should start somewhere. I hope they accept the application and even more so, hope that someone breaks the record quickly so I can try an again. I don't know muc...

Re: Going for a new (documented) world's record...

We've arranged for the films to be staggered by 10-15 min. If breaks are possible to set the record I'll be more than happy to take them. I still have to hear from Guinness. The "theater" In this instance has been built into the 5 or 6 room exhibit. Seats 30 in authentic theater seats. Really just a...

Re: Going for a new (documented) world's record...

I agree with you Rodney, and Clark Wilson has said as much to me. In early cinema, those players may well have put in 12 hour days, and I assume they had some breaks between audiences or films. I assume many were improvising and certainly more than one aspiring composer got into the act. I doubt the...

Re: When to start the accompaniment?

Some archives don't want music under their credits. Some do. When I play for the TCM Festival they even have me play live for their logo which appears before every screening at the festival and already has a soundtrack. Given autonomy, I will most often play for the opening logos and archive credits...

Re: 9 hours of silent films at LACMA Jan 17, 2016

Wow! That's some program, Michael. I'll pray that you don't end up with "iron claws" at the end of it all . . . Ha ha ha.... Silent films are a no brainer in terms of stamina. I used to play 13 hours a day as a dance accompanist in NYC and prior to that would practice about 12 hours a day at times....
