Re: Questions about exactly who played Salome in the 1923 film?

At that time, titles were not yet registered, so the same titles could be used by multiple companies (think of all the Good Night Nurses between 1916-1920). Now it couldn't be done.

David Kiehn was able to track down who owned them thanks to the State of California license database. He could find no connection with the filmmakers, and believes they were just early people finding a way to insert themselves in the action.

Pandering to young people. Would he like it if it was all black and white, I think not, because the color brings it to the present, who cares about that old fogy stuff. Gimmicky in other's hands by adding color and changing aspect ratio, but not Jackson's. Yeah, right. Silent London knows what she's...

Re: They Shall Not Grow Old

So you could watch THE GREAT DICTATOR in black and white, but god forbid, you had to watch all this in its original format in black and white, your eyes would fall out. So some things are sacrosanct, but the others, who cares, they were hacks, do whatever you want? There could have tinted the footag...

And why add color? Ken Burns doesn't, he leaves the footage as is. Pandering to young people and don't like black and white? The next thing you know we're back to Ted Turner colorizing classic movies.

Re: Panama Pacific International Exposition of 1915

Several shorts and travelogues were shot there, and film was a part of many of the exhibits, as I wrote in this post a couple of years ago. The Niles Essanay Museum was selling a DVD of some of the films shot there. There was even a mini film studio where people could see the process of recording an...

Re: Richard Oswalds Hound of Baskervilles (1929) found, restored and screened

Here was my review of it from SFSFF: Showing a bit of showmanship, the striking 1929 German version of “The Hound of the Baskevilles” followed, filled with dramatic Expressionism and chiaroscuro lighting. Following pretty closely to the Arthur Conan Doyle novel, the film opens on a foreboding, storm...

Charlie Ruggles, Dog Lover

Re: Guardian: Eyes on the pies: how Mabel Normand, Chaplin’s mentor, changed cinema

A few mistakes here. Sennett did not have Bathing Beauties in 1911 since he didn't have a studio and was still with Biograph, those didn't come until near the end of the decade. And while Mabel might have influenced Chaplin some, as we have discussed here, he took part of his act from people on the ...
