This was filmed recently, as it was announced last fall, and everybody jumped because Bogdanovich was going to do it.

HELEN'S BABIES has been restored thanks to David Stenn, who found a print in Italy with much less decomposition than the one previously out there, so this is much cleaner.

54th Annual Cinecon Goes to the Movies

Here's my review of the Festival. While no big new discoveries, overall it was an entertaining schedule of films, the typical type of programmers seen all over America from the 1920s-1950s.

Charlie Ruggles, Dog Lover

Beloved character actor loved dogs, owning them since childhood. By the 1930s, he owned 20. He turned his love of canines into a profitable business with his See Are Kennels in the 1930s and 1940s.

Re: A Harlett goes to Cinecon 54

Hi Ron, I saw it and really enjoyed it. Character actors Vince Barnett, Max Davidson, Bert Roach, Jack LaRue, and Sterling Holloway all played characters with their same names and the same characteristics as the characters they played onscreen. Vince was on trial for causing problems after renting g...

Re: Guardian: Eyes on the pies: how Mabel Normand, Chaplin’s mentor, changed cinema

A few mistakes here. Sennett did not have Bathing Beauties in 1911 since he didn't have a studio and was still with Biograph, those didn't come until near the end of the decade. And while Mabel might have influenced Chaplin some, as we have discussed here, he took part of his act from people on the ...

Sessue Hayakawa, Author

Sessue Hayakawa was one of the top 1910s film stars for his smouldering good looks and intense performances. After disagreements with American film production in the early 1920s, Hayakawa and his wife Tsuru Aoki moved overseas. When they returned to the United States in 1926, Hayakawa supposedly aut...

Re: Film Vault Fire at Cineteca de Bologna in July

Sounds like it was a nitrate vault, and if it was, everything in the vault would go up in flames in a fire, you cannot put nitrate on fire out with water, snow, etc., it just has to burn itself out.

That talk about FAUST sounds interesting. It is fascinating to read the stories in trade papers at the time about Lubitsch suggesting this to Pickford and his thought that Douglas Fairbanks could have played the role.

It is much more efficient to hit one button and see all the changes rather than having to hit each subject head one by one to see what new has happened. That is a waste of time.
