Re: Robert Youngson's M-G-M’s The Big Parade of Comedy 1964

…And I think Youngson also narrated The Love Goddesses (1965 JanusFilms), that would make a nice dvd release also. It's available, although a review complains about the mastering: https://www.amazon.com/Love-Goddesses-Carl-King/dp/6305339996/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1530062057&sr=8-2&keywords=the+lov...

Bob Vaughn's name comes up in the write-ups for the following Unknown Video DVDs. There might be others: Broken Hearts Of Broadway Memories Of The Silent Stars The Primitive Lover Sex The Swan (1925) Wagon Tracks (1919) Rick Going from memory here, but I think the Unknown Video releases of the two ...

Re: Avenue Theater, San Francisco

His electrifying performance for The Mark of Zorro had the audience whipped up into such a frenzy at the climax that at the closing fade-out the entire sold-out house leapt as one to its collective feet cheering. That remains for me the single most thrilling group movie experience I've ever had. I ...

Re: TCM Premieres Ducks & Drakes/The Bride's Play

Not to hijack your thread, but why doesn't somebody do a Kickstarter project to hire Ben M. to do scores for THE PATENT LEATHER KID and LILAC TIME so that TCM can run those? Because they are not in the public domain..... I realize that, but I'm not talking about a DVD release. WB owns the films, bu...

Did they still have the Robertson narration? Didn't Shickel later rejigger several, with new v/o from Sidney Pollack? Yes. They redid the Hawks, Vidor, Raoul Walsh and William Wellman episodes. They also did a new episode on Sam Fuller. All with Sydney Pollack narration. Besides the Hitchcock episo...

Re: BFI to release BIRTH OF A NATION in September

So true. The first real revelation for many, were the clips - correct speed! decent prints! tints! orchestral score! - in Brownlow's HOLLYWOOD. That's what did it for me. And, to circle back to what Mike was saying, how fuzzy even those good clips look now! The film clips in "Hollywood" were crummy...

Re: Image Entertainment releases

There was a point in the late 2000's at which Image got out of releasing silents. I recall that AllDay's Becoming Charley Chase set was originally supposed to be released by Image (they'd done AllDay's Langdon set), and then the game changed, and AllDay wound up working out a deal with VCI. Ben The...

Re: Resolution for 2016: Attend a Classic Film Festival

I made it to LA for Cinecon over the Labor Day weekend. Saw a lot of interesting films and got to visit with some really great people. Unfortunately I came away from it with the strong feeling that it was my last. My health is not great, and while I can function fine during my regular working life ...

Re: Reminder: THE WEDDING MARCH on TCM Thursday Evening!

The Photoplay restoration of The Wedding March is really more of a reconstruction, with scenes and shots pieced together from a number of different prints/sources. The end result is a version that is quite different from any previous version. So, the track from an earlier print would never match up...

Rob Farr wrote:No color during the apple blossom sequence, which I thought was a feature of the Photoplay version. I wonder if TCM just had the chrominance turned off for the cablecast?
No, it was the Corpus Christi parade sequence that was in Technicolor, and it was intact on the TCM broadcast.

I don't think the original track has ever been included in a home video release. I used to have a 16mm print that included it, back in the dark ages when I collected actual prints. Re: Buster Keaton Short Films Collection 1917-1923 Blu Ray

I'm really glad I followed my instincts and bought the Masters of Cinema set. I'm tired of having to buy multiple copies of blu-rays to get the version with the problems ironed out. Is "One Week" too contrasty on the MOC set? That is my only real gripe with the Kino set. Kind of like "The Rink" on ...

They got me very clear quotes on both 4k (which is much more expensive than 2k) digital DCPs and 35mm prints. To my surprise, the 35mm was about 35% CHEAPER than DCP. The going rate for 4K transfers is usually just under a dollar a foot, many post houses will cut significant discounts for transfers...

The marketplace has already spoken. No amount of grumbling or denal is going to turn back the clock. An excuse often used when replacing a superior medium with an inferior one. This is a common fallacy that often comes up in these discussions. The "charcoal gray" you refer to is a by-product of digital projection, and not digital itself. Re: WINGS (1927) on Youtube

I saw The Hateful Eight in 70mm. There is no question in my mind that it looks, simply, richer in 70mm-- the deeper blacks are black, not charcoal gray; other colors looked like jewels, like the vivid colors of oil paint. This is a common fallacy that often comes up in these discussions. The "charc...
