Re: THE IMMIGRANT, an early review

Well, when your definition of "pleasant" is "don't say anything people disagree with," it doesn't make for much of a discussion board, does it, Mike? Points were REPEATEDLY brought up in the "Immigrant" thread that were simply not addressed by the rank-and-file, who were more interested in infantile...

Re: Completeness of the Mutual Chaplin Flicker Alley set

Are you hallucinating?
There's none of that in Martin's posts, and none of it in mine.

And, even if there WAS, that's no reason to dismiss a cogent argument.

If you find the thread "tiresome and shrill, regardless of the merits," why not just refrain from participating in it?

That's what I admire about this place! So many of you people are so tolerant of opinions that are not your own and you have such funny little ways of expressing it.

Re: Completeness of the Mutual Chaplin Flicker Alley set

Regardless of what you might imagine, I would prefer a blu-ray off of an original 35mm print to a re-encoded PAL -> NTSC dub of a videotape taken off of television a couple of decades ago. Then again, I'm picky. Well then, couldn't you just not buy the set? I've already said I'm not going to buy th...

Re: Completeness of the Mutual Chaplin Flicker Alley set

there's no evidence that Chaplin ever issued any of his films in different lengths The Gold Rush-- issued in an edited, narrated form in 1942. Many of his films altered in some way for the 1960s-1970s reissues with Chaplin's scores: Modern Times trimmed of one stanza of a song, Shoulder Arms and ot...

Re: Completeness of the Mutual Chaplin Flicker Alley set

Robert Israel Music said: "I must say that there may be good reason to believe that some of the additional footage in the "B" version may possibly have been in the "A" version. The problem here is that there is not evidence that substantiates this theory beyond a shadow of a doubt." Refer to my earl...

Re: Completeness of the Mutual Chaplin Flicker Alley set

If you took the time to read the thread, you'd see that it's clear that we're not getting the longer print. I would, needless to say, be thrilled if this weren't the case. Nor does it make a lot of sense to wait for a film to be issued before discussing footage which might be overlooked in the resto...

Re: Completeness of the Mutual Chaplin Flicker Alley set

How ironic that the person who accuses me of hurling "personal invective" in his direction seems to have no problem calling our posts "nattering," when all they're attempting to do is alert people that the upcoming "restoration" of "The Immigrant" looks like it's going to be woefully incomplete. And...

Re: Completeness of the Mutual Chaplin Flicker Alley set

As you can see, then, the original version of "The Immigrant" clearly exists. It's been issued in 16mm by Black, Inc. (for whom the Chaplin Estate provided material) and was shown on the BBC (according to Glenn Mitchell). This version of the film is also in the Library of Congress, where the footage...

Re: Completeness of the Mutual Chaplin Flicker Alley set

No. It all depends on what speed the long version has been transferred at. Clearly it was not released as a three-reeler ANYWHERE, and clearly this print is complete (or near enough). Is there anyone who thinks the film DOESN'T play better with the additional footage? Don't be shy. Speak up. No? Oka...

Re: Completeness of the Mutual Chaplin Flicker Alley set

I'm not so sure there's a simple answer to your first question, Allen. Even as early as the 1925 Kodascope of "The Immigrant," we have shots that differ from those we usually see (the scene where Charlie meets Edna in the restaurant, for instance). So was the Kodascope cobbled together from differin...

Re: The Big Trail (1930)--new DVD coming

On my Sony Bravia, there's a setting to "force aspect ratio" - this keeps the image from squashing when I zoom in, but it also cuts some image off of either side.

It sounds like David Alp and I are seeing the same thing.

Re: The Big Trail (1930)--new DVD coming

Strange. I just checked and my player (Sony BDP-S360) is set to 16:9. The movie fills the screen when I begin playing it, but the people are squashed. In order to have the people look correct, I need to change the setting on my TV (also a Sony) from "full" to "normal" - but if I do that, the picture...

Re: The Big Trail (1930)--new DVD coming

Hmm. Rats. All this talk inspired me to pull out the Milestone DVD of "The Bat Whispers" and it has the same problem David Alp describes with his copy of "The Big Trail" - the widescreen version isn't anamorphic, and only shows up in a small window in the center of the screen. Unfortunately, in my c...

I don't see why pointing an obvious imperfection about which a lot had been said since at leat 15 years ago is taken so hard by David. And I don't see why people keep ignoring David's statement that he is not trying to release the longest-possible version of each film. He's trying to release as acc...

David seems to be claiming that "The Immigrant" can't possibly be as long as we're claiming because it's "more than a 2-reel subject would ever be, as it would not fit on the spools." Well, clearly, since we HAVE the film with the extra minutes, it WAS issued as a two reel subject and DID fit on the...

I agree, but I don't believe that the edited version of "The Immigrant" WAS the original domestic release. It's not a matter of just cutting out a few more vomiting gags - but trimming the film to have people popping in and out of shots rather than walking in and out of them makes the film jumpier a...

Re: Completeness of the Mutual Chaplin Flicker Alley set

Given Chaplin's working method and ego, I can't accept that he would have intentionally prepared different cuts of the Mutuals for the U.S. and overseas markets (and I'm speaking in terms of content, not camera angles). I think it's clear that the cuts made to "The Immigrant" (and at least some of t...

Interesting, in the same post where you speak about mindlessly following the herd, you seem to take the position that, as far as the Warner Archive is concerned, anyone who "complains" about the inferior media should just shut up, be thankful we're "given" anything, and hand over our money.
