Re: "THE BATTLE OF THE CENTURY" ON DVD?

The US home video rights to the L&H silent catalog are held by Corinth films. I actually posted a query on the firm's facebook wall sometime last year (before the rediscovery of the second reel) and received this honest, but still disappointing response: We do have the rights, but it is a huge finan...

Re: Kino to release blu-rays/DVDs of some Paramount silents

Indeed. LOC has many other important Paramount silents that are hard to see, including Swanson's HUMMINGBIRD and STAGE STRUCK; Bebe Daniels' LOVERS IN QUARANTINE; OLD IRONSIDES; FORGOTTEN FACES; WOLF SONG; and many others. Since Paramount did release a VHS edition of "Old Ironsides" with a Gaylord ...

Re: Kino to release blu-rays/DVDs of some Paramount silents

Kino just announced that it will be releasing a DVD and blu-ray of "The Sheik." I have to admit that this is not a title I was expecting to come from this licensing agreement due to its PD status (perhaps we will be seeing some of those PD titles that have Paramount donor restrictions on the surviv...

Re: Disney Orphans Benefit 1934 X 1941 Side by Side

In the wake of the success of Snow White in the late 1930s, Disney was considering several ideas for future feature-length films, and one idea was to produce an anniversary/commemorative film showing the various Disney characters attending a screening of some of their older cartoons and interacting ...

Kino to release blu-rays/DVDs of some Paramount silents

According to the Kino insider who posts on the Home Theater Forum, Kino has made a licensing deal with Paramount that involves several silents. The exact titles have not been disclosed yet though (alas it was confirmed that The Wedding March is still licensed to another distributor). Let the specula...

Re: It's the 8th Annual "Watch That Movie Night," Fri Jan. 2

I watched the Criterion blu-ray of "The Lady Vanishes." People often refer to Hitchcock as the "Master of Suspense," and I'm not going to dispute that. However, I do think that particular designation may give those not familiar with Hitch's work an erroneous depiction because there is so much more t...

Does the 1921 release version of The Kid even survive in any form? Am I correct in assuming that the 1972 rerelease version was adapted from Rollie Totheroh's 1940s reconstruction from alternate takes?

Does the seven reel Mack Sennett feature A Small Town Idol (1921) exist in any other form aside from the two reel cut-down version released by Warner Bros. in the late 1930s? For that matter, are the late 1930s reissue versions of Tumbleweeds , Son of the Sheik , and The Eagle significantly differen...

Although my collection is in too much of a jumble* to do an easy search for all the titles that I have, I did just examine the two Will Rogers films, In Old Kentucky and Doubting Thomas . I looked at the discs and they look physically fine. I then fast-forwarded through each film and that was OK al...

High Failure Rate of Warner Bros and Fox DVDs?

Several weeks ago I posted a thread about the experiences I had with Fox's DVD of "The Luck of the Irish." Since then, I have made the disturbing discovery of several other Fox and Warner Bros. DVDs that have seemingly rotted. I have been purchasing DVDs since December of 2000, and I have always tak...

Warning about "The Luck of the Irish" DVD

Several years ago I purchased a Tyrone Power DVD set primarily to acquire "The Luck of the Irish" (most of the other films in the collection were good too). I have long enjoyed the movie, and I try to revisit it about once a year or so (I say this to establish that I've had several error-free viewin...

Re: Restored version of VARIETÉ (1925) on Bluray and DVD

Wow. I never in my lifetime thought I'd be saying this, but the horrendous silent film "scores" of Maria Newman and Air don't sound so bad now after all, and Michael Polher sounds like a downright musical genius. This "accompaniment" is so mind-bogglingly terrible, so perfectly amazingly rotten, th...

I don't think that the Harold Lloyd clue is referring to "Speedy" because I don't recall Lloyd being pursued on foot in that film (it has been a few years since I have seen the movie, so perhaps I'm mistaken). I do recall Lloyd being pursued on foot though in "Why Worry," "For Heaven's Sake," and "P...
