M. Göttsching honors W. Sommerfeld

Manuel Göttsching will honor Willy Sommerfeld who recently died at the age of 103 during an event at the Berlinale film festival.

Because of the sudden death of Willy Sommerfeld (103), the last original silent movie pianist of the 20s (about whom Manuel Göttsching produced the film THE SOUNDS OF SILENTS) there will be a kind of IN MEMORIAM-EVENT during the Berlin Film Festival (February 7-17, 2008) including the screening of the film and a concert by Manuel Göttsching himself.

Manuel will accompany W.F. Murnau’s silent movie THE HAUNTED CASTLE (SCHLOSS VOGELÖD, 1921) live on electronics.

The idea of this event is to demonstrate the beginnings of music in film through Mr. Sommerfeld’s art (captured in our film) and, Manuel Göttsching’s performance showing where we stand today in development and with technical possibilities. Inspired by Mr. Sommerfeld’s live improvisation on piano, Manuel Göttsching will improvise live on computer.

As the original score to F.W. Murnau’s THE HOUNTED CASTLE was lost and there is no original music, the Goethe Institut will release the movie with Manuel Göttsching’s music. So following to this event a DVD will be available all over the world…

But check out the film THE SOUNDS OF SILENTS, the film on Mr. Sommerfeld as well. http://www.willysommerfeld.de.

The exact date will soon be confirmed. We’ll keep you updated.
