“Once upon a Hollywood time, one of filmdom’s biggest directors was Lois Weber. Woodrow Wilson was president, and women couldn’t have voted for him even if they had wanted too… but inside the movie industry, women thrived, and Weber thrived above all others.” – Manohla Dargis
Courtesy of a new restoration from Milestone (with a dazzling new score by dance composer John Sweeney), the brilliant expressiveness of legendary ballerina Anna Pavlova graces the big screen once again. But Pavlova isn’t the only heroine of this long-underrated film – there’s also pioneering female filmmaker Lois Weber (Shoes) herself, arguably the most important and prolific female director of the silent film era.
Dirs. Lois Weber and Phillips Smalley, 1916, DCP, 112 min.
