The Silent Treatment presents the world premiere of Paramount Archives’ brand new digital preservation of "The Covered Wagon". The screening begins with an introduction by Jeff McCarty of the Paramount Archives and features live accompaniment by Cliff Retallick.
This seminal entry in the history of early Westerns was the 29th President of the United States’ favorite film. In the words of a reverent Warren G. Harding, after seeing the film: “I sat entranced. There was more than the picturesque, more than sorrow and discouragement, more than appealing characters and enthralling heroism. There was more than the revelation of the irresolute who failed in fitness to survive, more than tragedy and comedy in their inseparable blend. There was more than the scouts who surpassed our fancies, more than nature’s relentless barriers revealed. Everywhere aflame was the soul of unalterable purpose.”
“The Covered Wagon blazed the trail for the epic western… James Cruze took the plunge to turn the western into the true epic of our history that it is.”—Joseph McBride, Los Angeles Times
Directed by James Cruze,1923, digital presentation, 98 min.
