THE ANCIENT LAW an amazing 1923 silent by Dupont which was recently restored (and which I have loved for a long time) will be touring the US with a very special score by Donald Sosin (Piano) and Alicia Svigalis (violin). Alicia is a founding member of the Klezmatics. Below is info on the film and list of dates. I can't confirm all the exact dates and venues as many are at festivals that don't want details until they announce them

Director E.A DuPont

1923 Germany 135 minutes

Set in Galicia in the 1860s Baruch is a Rabbi's son from the shtetle who leaves home to become famous Shakespearean actor and is disowned by his father. But Baruch continues to long for home, and must find a way to reconcile his religious heritage with his love of secular literature. The movie paints a complex portrait of the tension between tradition and modernity. The plot was more or less taken and updated for THE JAZZ SINGER but THE ANCIENT LAW is a better and deeper movie. The Deutsche Kinemathek has done a major new restoration that premiered at Berlin Film Fest in February. It had its US premiere at San Francisco Silent Film Festival. Baruch, a rabbi’s son, is dreaming of moving away from his small Galician shtetl and becoming an actor, much to his father’s chagrin. Joining a travelling theatre troupe, he soon meets Austrian Archduchess Elisabeth Theresia, who falls for him. With her support he becomes a star of the stage in Vienna, but will he ever be able to reconcile his new-found fame with the Jewish home he left behind? A stunning new restored version of this German-Jewish film classic.
