Library friends host classic Laurel and Hardy film festival

4 September 2008

THE Friends of the Ipswich Library Service (FOILS) will host the next instalment of its popular film screenings program later this month.

Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke said the program had been going strong for the past five years.

"It is a popular and regular part of our annual FOILS program and gives the community the chance to view a selection of classic old films," Cr Pahlke said.

"The movie night will be held from 5.30pm on September 26 in the Barry Jones Auditorium and includes a light supper prior to the screening."

Cr Pahlke said movie-goers would be treated to an old-time movie experience with the screening of a classic film by Laurel and Hardy.

"The next movie screening will feature a montage of clips from five of Laurel and Hardy's films - Liberty, Be Big, Towed in a Hole, The Music Box and Busy Bodies."

The popular United States based comedy team consisted of thin, British-born Stan Laurel and heavy, American-born Oliver Hardy.

They became famous during the early half of the 20th century for their work in motion pictures and also appeared on stage throughout America and Europe.

Cr Pahlke encouraged people to take advantage of the special film screening which was part of FOILS' regular calendar of events with the Ipswich Library and Information Service.

"FOILS is a group of enthusiastic people who work to support, extend and promote the service and council appreciates the work they do for the city's libraries.

"The group meets from 5.30pm on the fourth Wednesday of each month in Study Room 2 on the first floor of the Ipswich Library on the corner of South and East streets, Ipswich.

"The Friday film sessions are open to all members of the public, not just FOILS members, so come along, enjoy the fun and perhaps make some new friends as well."

Admission is $7 per person.

Bookings are essential and can be made by telephoning (07) 3810 6815.
