DAWSON CITY: FROZEN TIME (2017, Bill Morrison) is meditation on cinema’s past pieces together the bizarre true history of a long-lost collection of 533 nitrate film prints from the early 1900s. Located just south of the Arctic Circle, Dawson City was settled in 1896 as a gold rush town, but it was also the final stop for a distribution chain that sent films to the Yukon, and that’s where they remained until uncovered in 1978. Director, writer and cinematographer Bill Morrison drew upon these rare films with interviews and photographs to craft this remarkable story of disappearance and rediscovery.
