RAPSODIA SATANICA (1915) Italy

In my efforts to pair vintage films with vintage recordings I came across this 1915 retelling of the Faust story with a female protagonist. RAPSODIA SATANICA stars Lyda Borelli, one of the great divas of Italian cinema at the time, directed by the talented but ill-fated Nino Oxilia (he perished in WWI combat). Of particular interest is the original music score that was written by the opera composer Pietro Mascagni (Cavalleria Rusticana) who conducted the score at this film's premiere.

The film is on YT in a couple of different versions but they all seem the run at 44 minutes, which to my eyes is way too slow. The Mascagni music is also on YT but not in a vintage recording. So I paired the best looking video with the music, altering both the fit a 39-minute running time that seems about right. If you'd like to see and hear the results please check out EARLY OPERA RECORDINGS 1890 -1930 on FB:
