The Song "White Christmas" Soothes the Homefront

The song "White Christmas" became one of the first mega hits on the charts, possibly due to its release during World War II. Almost forgotten is its opening, which shows the song was written about not seeing snow in Beverly Hills, California, and dreaming of it.

Also little-known:

The version that most of us know best is actually a re-recording, done because of wear/damage to the original master.

Absoutely correct Craig!

In fact the version usually played on radio today dates from the 1950s and was the THIRD version recorded by Crosby. The original from 1942 is far preferable.
