region free blu

Unread post by Harlett O'Dowd » Fri Jan 26, 2018 10:40 am

D'oh!

I was all set to watch the Blu of NAPOLEON for this year's "watch that movie night" only to learn the hard way that though my DVD player is region free, my Blu apparently is not.

Any suggestions on what to invest in going forward?

A friend has a Sony Blu-Ray player (don't know the model, unfortunately) that's been made region-free and has worked for him flawlessly. I see that Bombay Electronics, from whom I got my pricey region-free Oppo, advertises a Sony for $99.

I got both of mine from 220 as well. You pay a little more but they support them, unlike if you buy something at Target where they'd say "Region what?"

Me, too. LG from 220, and all the LGs are on sale presently.

I'm using the Seiki SR4KP1 blu-ray player, which used to be available from B & H; https://www.bhphotovideo.com" target="_blank

I've had no problems with it.

Oppo 203, fully modded from 220. Works beautifully, not just in terms of playing every variation of disc I can throw at it, but also because of its high-quality upscaling.

Also an Oppo user. You have to manually change the region for blu-rays, which is a simple matter of entering a code and rebooting, and I haven't yet come across a disc it wouldn't play.

Also great for many hi-def audio formats (DVD-A, HDCD, SACD, blu-ray audio and so on).

Alternatively, if you do not mind having two machines sitting on your shelf, buy a European blu-ray player and play your imported disks with that one.

Those wanting to purchase an Oppo player better hurry up, the company announced its departure from the market: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/oppo-dig ... 38961.html" target="_blank

That's a shame. Best player I've ever had.

Went to buy an Oppo at Bombay Electronics yesterday, in anticipation that I will have to buy a 4K TV soon enough for work, but they have sold out. World-Imports still has some for about the same price.

Thanks for the notification. I decided I'd better have a backup in case mine konks out, so a 4K is on the way from World. Not that I have any 4K discs, but since my television is compatible, I may as well buy one and see what it looks like.

Can't afford a new one. Mine is a BDP 93 zone-free. Still hanging in there. Great machine for upscaling.
