I have this number on the window tab for Nitrateville.

Anyone know what it indicates?

That number is the number of new postings in the thread.

I see the number no matter where I am on this forum however.

It is the number of threads you have posted on that now have new posts.

Sounds plausible. Honestly, I have no idea. Some of this just comes with the updates to PhpBB.

When I got a number on a tab right after the upgrade it turned out to be a notice that someone had quoted a post of mine. Disappeared right after I read the post. Similar notifications are common on other forums I follow, but are usually attached to a specific icon provided for them rather than on a tab.

You mean it's the same number regardless of the threads? That is odd. Do you get a lot of PM's? Could it be them?

Sometimes I open Webmail and then open another tab to some other website. While I'm on the other website, the Webmail tab will indicate new mail arriving in my inbox. The number of new mails is set out exactly the same way as in your screengrab -- that's why I guessed yours is indicating the number of new postings in that site.

Hey Darren, I've suddenly started getting the same thing you've been getting. You're right, it seems to have no relation to unread topics or unread postings. Odd...

CoffeeDan, the number appears even before I post to a thread. So it may not be what you suggested.

One thing that definitely causes it is someone quoting you in a post. It's happened to me before and again just this morning. Ed Lorusso quoted me in his "new TV" thread in the Tech Talk Forum. On my next visit here I had a (1) in the tab. After I read his reply with the quote the (1) went away, just as in the other instances.

Jim
I blame myself. In trying not to repeat myself too much, I'm afraid my explanation was too concise. Let me try again, and forgive me if I'm too repetitive:

When you post on a thread, the website automatically subscribes you to that thread, and sends you email notifications whenever somebody else posts on that thread. The number you see in the tab is the number of your subscribed threads that you haven't read yet. You'll notice that the number goes down as you click on each one. I think the number might include new private messages, too -- I've also seen the number change when I click on a private message.

I should also add that you can disable subscriptions by unclicking "Notify me when a reply is posted" under Options. You can also limit your current subscriptions under "Manage subscriptions" on the User Control Panel.

Nope. All you have to do is post once in a thread (which you did), and the website will notify you (with a number) every time there's a new post in that thread. Has nothing to do with quotations.

Did you hit "Mark all forums read" at any time? If I had 74 unread threads, I would have!

It means there are new posts (or replies) on 74 of your subscribed threads that you haven't read yet.

Well, it didn't.

Bruce and Donald - that's because you two were seeing the number of non-active signups. Those were spammers that I deleted a day or two ago, so now it will only show a number if someone new signs up.

"Subscribe", as in "notify me by email whenever a new posting is made in this particular thread"? Then it's wrong in my case, because I don't subscribe to anything. I just login and click on "new posts" and take it from there.
