Great News. I wonder why they decided to skip 1929.

Can't wait to see the release! All we have had up to now is sporadic titles on TCM.

Hope they use excellent transfers! Chase's best work was between 1930 and 35 at Hal Roach....the Columbias are
decent but not in the same league with the Roach releases.

It's odd that there seem to be a lot of Charlie Chase DVDs while other Roach series are underrepresented. Are these PD? Is that why there are so many sets?

I talked to Kit Parker and a lot of what has been prematurely shared on social media is inaccurate (e.g. it is not being released by VCI). I wrote an article promoting the set, which I had Kit read and approve. Here is the link.

I agree that this is huge news for us comedy film buffs, and my article urges everyone to buy a copy so that future volumes are released. I can only imagine the years of hard work and the financial necessities of putting something like this together, so let's all help make it a success.

Well, if I hadn't heard from people I think are solid, I'd question how much this set was for real at all, given the curious way it's been announced, but they assure me it is. The missing details will no doubt dribble in over time. In the meantime, assuming any set with Thelma Todd covering 1930-1 has The Pip From Pittsburgh, this is exciting news, and as for why Charley Chase and not somebody else— because he has fans. If these sell, maybe other things will follow.

Relatively few of the Hal Roach shorts are PD. A few of the Our Gang and perhaps a few others, but the bulk are
owned by a few distributors.

Charlie Chase made MANY talkie shorts at Roach into the mid-30s when Roach discontinued most of his comedy short
series and went to features. Charlie showed up at Columbia in '37 and made shorts there until '40 when he died.

His Hal Roach sound shorts are well crafted and his characterization really flourished with sound.

The marketing for this set is certainly... unique

Image

No post was removed by anyone in charge, of course.

Update: the director of marketing and customer relations for this set continues to insist there was/were posts removed by this management. I am told that someone did have a link up to Roberts' post and, apparently the original poster then removed it (the only person besides a moderator who can, and no moderator did). Me, I never saw any of it, and am inclined to think not linking to his posts is doing the sales potential for this set a favor...

In any case, this is all illogical since there plainly is a thread now. Since our interest is in the set, not in back and forths, we're done with that but remain happy to highlight actual information about this set as it unfolds, as we do for any release about the era we all love.

There is more information (but also, possibly, more misinformation) here.

I am very excited to hear about this set. It is unfortunate that there is ill-will toward fellow film fans. We all like to laugh, so what's the point of deriding each other?

Is there any way of telling who posted it and then removed it?

If there are any shorts I haven't seen, I'll buy a copy. Otherwise, no.

Is being a sourpuss a requirement to post in that other silent movie board?

Well, the story (from the Director of Marketing for the set) is that an Amazon listing just appeared and they're trying to get it pulled down. The number of discs is unknown, the November release date is apparently not to be trusted, either.

I would wait for more solid information on this set before doing anything.

I guess only the surly ones are the ones I notice.

I put in an order on the Amazon listing. That price is fair.

Amazon should honor it when it finally comes out as long as the ISBN number is the same. I don't get billed until it ships. No risk for me at all.

I completely agree with you maliejandra, all this "I know more than anyone else about this genre-director-actor" / "My book on so and so is the best, others are error-ridden junk" drama is a turn off and if anything the silent movie lovers community is quite small and should be more supportive and cordial toward any "rivals".

Latest word on the Amazon page for this, from Paul Gierucki on Facebook:
Thanks for posting, Frank! Unfortunately, even though this is on Amazon, the page is not supported or sponsored by VCI / Sprocket Vault -- the actual producers of the set. As Richard mentioned in his posts, a sub distributor has created this page (without permission) in order to collect advance sales. As of today, VCI has not yet announced the full content list, the number of discs, or the final purchase price for the Chase set. Everyone ordering from that Amazon page will likely receive a message stating that the title is unavailable, get a refund, and be forced to order again directly from the VCI page when the listing goes live. It is a shame that Amazon allows anyone other than the actual producer to create a product page, worse that they have not yet corrected the error.
So there's no harm in pre-ordering, but unlikely to be much result, either.

Amazon has a preorder price guarantee that is tied to the ISBN number. If it's sold by Amazon and carries the same ISBN they'll honor the price.

This set is officially official, and ready to order for real now.

For Immediate Release

A NEW COLLECTION OF CHARLEY CHASE SHORTS IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME ON DVD

Volume One Contains 18 Rare Talking Comedy Shorts From The Golden Age of Hollywood

(Phoenix, AZ) The Sprocket Vault announces its latest DVD release: CHARLEY CHASE AT HAL ROACH: THE TALKIES VOLUME ONE: 1930-31, the first in a series and available exclusively on Amazon. These 18 comedy shorts on a 2-DVD set showcases this great but somewhat neglected comedian during some of his prime film days.

From 1924-1936, Charley Chase made hilarious short comedies for the Hal Roach Studios. He was one of their most popular comedy stars in both the silent and sound eras. His talkie shorts for Hal Roach have never been collected into a comprehensive collection before, and now THE SPROCKET VAULT brings them to the public in a planned multi-volume collection designed to reacquaint comedy fans to his wonderful short films.

Charley Chase was considered the leading man of comedians, a handsome, talented performer with strong comedy credentials on both sides of the camera. He became Hal Roach's number two star in terms of box office, second only to Laurel and Hardy during his stay at Roach. Chase utilized a style that incorporated classic visual comedy blended with more situational and screwball elements, his sound comedies also highlight his musical abilities. Chase was an accomplished singer and dancer as well.

The films in this 1930-31 collection are also complimented by the presence of Charley Chase's then-frequent leading lady, the lovely and vivacious Thelma Todd. She was a beautiful and statuesque blonde with great timing and comedy talent, whose work with Charley Chase and other comedians propelled her to stardom in her own Hal Roach comedy series. Her career as a lead comedienne was tragically cut short by her early death in 1935 at the age of 29.

The Sprocket Vault's new Charley Chase collection utilizes original Hal Roach Studio print materials for its digital masters, and each short on this collection is accompanied by a commentary track from noted film historian and Hal Roach authority Richard M. Roberts, who shines new light on the "Lot of Fun" and the people involved in making these classic comedies in an informative, clever, and entertaining manner.
