I was alerted to Patricia Engel's death, although the name was unfamiliar to me, but the words 'Artificial Eye' most certainly was. After involvement with the London Film Festival and The Other Cinema', Engel, and her husband Andi (don't know if they were married at the time) founded Artificial Eye, a distribution company which will be known to most if not all film enthusiasts.
According to 'The Guardian' obituary, the first films they distributed were THE TRAVELLING PLAYERS and THE SPIDER'S STRATAGEM in 1976, which were shown at the long defunct Academy Cinema in Oxford Street. I remember seeing both there, unaware that a piece of history was being made. As well as distributing non-commercial films on 16mm they went into video and later onto DVD. Few of us on Nitrateville will not have examples of their films on our shelves.
