Lewis Gilbert 1920-2018

Although few would describe Gilbert as an 'auteur' he had a remarkably long career (nearly sixty years) in the director's chair and seemed willing to try almost anything. His output ranged from ALFIE (1966, probably his most famous film) through SINK THE BISMARCK!, HMS DEFIANT, three Bond films and latterly EDUCATING RITA and SHIRLEY VALENTINE. In addition, there were the documentary shorts of the 1940s and smaller films in the fifties such as TIME, GENTLEMEN, PLEASE.
