Jharvat- Most of my collection has come from Ebay, although I occasionally get lucky at various shows and conventions.

Same here although a review at Google Images can sometimes reveal a high resolution image worthy of a color transfer. And you can't beat the price.

So far, the trusty Google search has been my sole source of material. I've gotten creative with my searches and have turned up some decent images in unexpected places. Few are really high resolution and some are too small to make good subjects for colorization. Even so, I've got enough to keep me busy for a while.

Has anyone ever tried this to boost the resolution of an image? This what I do and it seems to help. First let's say I have an image that's only 72 dpi. I save it as a pdf and open it in Photoshop. There I can choose the image size as either small, large, or fit page. I choose fit page and select the dpi I want to save it as. I select 400 dpi and save as a jpg file. Any takers on this one?

That's interesting Bob. How does it do with the focus? I find that if I have a small image and blow it up, it still looks "indistinct" when I "enlarge it" as it were. Mind you, I am not doing it your method - which I must surely try.

Donald, good point. I avoid postage stamp sized images. I use images of a good size where the only problem is low dpi. The results are pretty good.

Man, Bessie fought me the whole way tonight. Wish I had a really nice high-res copy of this pic to work from.

Used a little depth-of-field trick to keep her face sharp and blur the rest.

I concur - nice work, Seabird! What is your tool of choice? Photoshop?

Goodness, I thought that this thread was beginning to die out but now it's a hive of activity, with new faces as well (and new styles - I really like Seabird's desaturated look).

Here's Cissy Fitzgerald in her pre-movie Vaudeville Days

My copy of this photo of Mary Thurman was already hand-colored, but it is somewhat faded. So I've removed the color and added my own.

Thanks, seabird! I've only been doing it for a couple of weeks, but starting to get the hang of it. Going for a more hand-colored look with mine. Love yours, btw, especially the one of Vivian. Very nice.

The lovely Marion Davies. The design isn't mine, just the colouring.

Des, very impressive Marion with a decided 3-D effect.

Hi There, I have seen this particular picture of Marion a few times, she is a really popular subject. This is one of the better ones, really nice !!

Hi Seabird and Bob,
Thank you both for your kind words. I really enjoyed doing this picture and relished some of the challenges it presented. Not having done much colouring lately I feel that I was getting back into my stride with this one. Thanks again!

I really need to stop trying to colorize these soft focus pics. They end up being more frustration than anything else. This is a pic of Jeanette Loff. Not too familiar with her movie career but she was quite a looker. :)

Here's an extremely soft-focus photo of Alice Lake that I colored a few days ago. I agree that it is a challenge.

I think they look good but like you say they are frustrating, I just color them the same way. What's frustrating to me is finding an edge to work with.
