The best books on Classic Stills, Portraits, Cards?

Unread post by Phillyrich » Mon Feb 04, 2013 8:03 pm

I've come recently to appreciate the flip side of moving pictures--the ones that stand still.

Can anyone advise as to what the best illustrated resource books are on 1--classic Hollywood stills, or 2--classic star portraits, or 3--film lobby cards/posters? These images say so much, and can be as captivating as the films themselves.

It seems Mark Vieira has done a lot of good work here. I have "Sin In Soft Focus," and just ordered a used copy of "Garbo."

A Pictorial History of the Silent Screen by Daniel Blum. Although the photos are small, it is an incredible collection.

Hollywood: The Pioneers by Kevin Brownlow. It goes with the documentary TV series.

Any of Jeffry Vance's great books on Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd (and probably Douglas Fairbanks, but I don't have that one.)

Foyer Pleasure by John Kobal.

And there's always my website...

Well, if you're looking for books on stills, here's a few:

Clarence Sinclair Bull and Raymond Lee, The Faces of Hollywood
Robert Dance and Bruce Robertson, Ruth Harriet Louise and Hollywood Glamour Photography (Dance has a new book out as well)
Joel Finler, Hollywood Movie Stills
Roman Freulich, Forty Years in Hollywood
John Kobal, The Art of the Great Hollywood Portrait Photographers (he has several books)
Barbara McCandless, Bonnie Yochelson, Richard Koszarski, New York to Hollywood, the Photography of Karl Struss
Christoph Schifferli, Paper Dreams, The Lost Art of Hollywood Still Photography
Whitney Stine, The Hurrell Style
Mark Vieira, C. S. Bull, the Man Who Shot Garbo
Stephen White, Strauss-Peyton, Celebrity and Glamour
Max Munn Autrey, One Photographer's Hollywood
Masters of Starlight, Photographers in Hollywood

Dr. David Shields has a new book coming out in June called Still, documenting the history of the early still photographers.
