Bob, LC,
Well, it looks like I missed allot of good stuff in this thread. Harold Lloyd, the scene from THE KING OF KINGS, LILAC TIME., Clara with Marceline Day. Wow! Didn't expect any of that. I'll start keeping closer tabs on the thread. Meantime, if you want to use some of my stuff to see how it works, feel free to do so.

Re: Old Hollywood Photos in 3D
I'm becoming a little more choosey before giving a photo the Fells-O-Vision treatment. Here's a new one I just posted on the Color Photo thread but it has such a nice spatial perspective between foreground and background I thought it would make a good candidate for 3D:

D.W. Griffith's last silent, LADY OF THE PAVEMENTS (1929) with Lupe Velez, William Boyd, Jetta Goudal, and Albert Conti (above).

Not silent film related, but fascinating nonetheless; a 1903 stereographic photo of the Man-eater of Calcutta in captivity at the Calcutta Zoo. It had supposedly eaten about 200 people(!).

I hope that this is the right thread to post this.

Rick,
I'd say this is the right place for your link. I recently bought a large number of stereoscopic views depicting WWI. These were taken in the first year or so before things started getting ugly. As a result, they are more like propaganda to keep up morale. At any rate, thanks for posting this story.
Here's an interesting "East Meets West" of the Graf Zepplin flying over Giza about 1928:

Re: Old Hollywood Photos in 3D
I had a partial set from THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and scanned them before parting ways.
Most are long shots with very little 3D effect. Mostly backgrounds and nothing in the fore. The above featuring The Red Death is about the only good one in the set.

I will have to look in a couple of removable hard drives for the scans I did on my Phantom of the Opera stereo views.
For now here is my folder for several eBay auctions for Hunchback and Phantom stereo cards.

Nell Craig forgiven for not exactly being in 3D here
In the full size images, you can see the photographer reflected in Craig's eyes
(which is also the case, I think, with Jobyna Ralston's first close up in Hot Water)
The photo server seems to have deleted the Craig image, so here is a substitute

Re: Nell Craig forgiven for not exactly being in 3D here
We could take the better looking photo and process it into simulated 3-D but there's no foreground/background perspective so the image is far from an ideal candidate.JFK wrote:In the full size images, you can see the photographer reflected in Craig's eyes

Re: Old Hollywood Photos in 3D
One way is to hold an antique Stereopticon in front of your computer screen to direct each eye toward the proper image (at least for the full-size stereopticon card reproductions). However the easiest way is to "free-view" them in 3-D by reducing your screen display size to about 75% so you can stare at the double image and let each eye focus on the appropriate side until they appear to merge into one 3D image.DANY_09 wrote:Hi admin. Re: Old Hollywood Photos in 3D
Good advice. And you may want to practice "free viewing" on some of the 3-D slides I posted above, especially the Phantom of the Opera and Hunchback. The slide of the dirigible Graf Zepplin over Giza is an especially good one for a beginner.Christopher Jacobs wrote:One way is to hold an antique Stereopticon in front of your computer screen to direct each eye toward the proper image (at least for the full-size stereopticon card reproductions). All three photos look like simulated 3-D to me, taking flat images and making them into two levels. The Keaton-Cooper image on top is especially noticeable with both actors "flat" and the background also flat but there's the perception of distance between the front images and the back images.

Re: Old Hollywood Photos in 3D
Nice camera! I'm looking for a digital 3-D camera that doesn't cost a fortune. I'm not sure that it exists. I've experimented using a single lens digital camera by carefully positioning it a few inches to the right (or left) to approximate the two lens positions on real 3-D cameras. The results are quite good but they're no substitute for the real equipment.

Re: Old Hollywood Photos in 3D
I googled “digital 3d camera” and discovered that yes, you can spend several thousand dollars on one if you like, but there are some attachments that look like lens splitters for a couple of hundred dollars. I have no doubt they turn up at places like Willoughby’s in Manhattan for less.
