Can you name this young man; a future President

Unread post by sepiatone » Tue Mar 19, 2013 10:02 am

since Im on a bent with and am falling in love with daguerreotypes and autochrome color(actually renewing my interest from the 1980s) and since we're approaching the 200th anniversary of the invention of photography 2026, I thought I would put this little teaser photo of one of our Presidents to test. I am floored by the quality, frankness and preservation of some daguerreotypes, most 140+ years old. The image is obviously any US president from 1826 to the present day, basically the time period of photography as an invention.

I was close, but I thought it was Eleanor Roosevelt.

Boy! He's chiselled, by the standards of any era! That's a really impressive physique.

Now I understand a little better why my American grandmother idolized Teddy...

Either John Tyler or Zachary Taylor.

What the heck is a Canadian doing answering this question?

I would guess Grant, Garfield or Benjamin Harrison. Don't recognize the face, so it must have been covered up by a beard.

Could be a young Franklin Pierce:

Jim- you were spot on about the beard.

Frederica - Franklin Pierce was definitely quite handsome - his dashing looks carried him quite far in politics. He was a terrible president, but I have a little sympathy for him: All three of his children died in childhood - the last in an especially tragic way. Shortly before Pierce was to be inaugurated the family was traveling by train. There was a derailment and Franklin and Jane Pierce watched their 11 year old son die trapped in the wreckage. He'd been a drinker before but this sent him into a state of drunken apathy.

I thought about RBH, but he has that prominent forehead. In the younger picture, his hair is combed over that big ol' forehead. It threw me off.
