The Hollywood Heights (And Widths)

Unread post by JFK » Sun May 05, 2013 6:12 pm

A thread (slightly) interested in how Hollywood measured up...and sideways, and around.

Alan Ladd was not the only performer whom, filmmakers believed, presented a vertical challenge.

With The Falcon Takes Over (1942)- a low budget version of Farewell, My Lovely-
the RKO casting department found itself stymied when attempting to fill
the shoes of Moose Malloy, a character described as being a towering 6’5” tall.
Ward Bond (6’ 1’’), the studio’s anointed Moose, provided the role’s menace -
until he stood beside his fellow players. And director Irving Reis didn’t help much.
In their main encounters with Bond- in order to maintain the illusion of Moose's height-
1. George Sanders had to stand downhill, leaning into, Bond
2. Allen Jenkins either had to bend his knees (outside of camera range)
or chauffeur Bond (who sat on an unseen car seat)
3. Turhan Bey had to fight Bond in the dark
4. Helen Gilbert had to remain seated

George Sanders as Gay Lawrence aka The Falcon 6’3’’
Lynn Bari as Ann Riordan 5’7’’
James Gleason as Inspector Mike O'Hara 5’8’’
Allen Jenkins as Jonathan 'Goldy' Locke approx 5’10’’
Helen Gilbert as Diana Kenyon
Ward Bond as Moose Malloy 6’1’’
Edward Gargan as Bates 6’2’’
Anne Revere as Jessie Florian 5’5’’
George Cleveland as Jerry
Harry Shannon as Grimes 6’1’’
Hans Conried as Lindsey Marriot 6’2’’ (no scenes shared with Bond)
Turhan Bey as Jules Amthor
Pedro de Cordoba as Grimes 6’1’’
Charlie Hall as Swan Club Waiter Louie 5’5’’

In their 2nd attempt at the Chandler story- Murder My Sweet (1944)-
RKO cast a little better
Dick Powell as Philip Marlowe 6' 0''
Mike Mazurki as Moose Malloy 6’5’’

Long before there were Smart Phones and PDA's, there was Eddy Baron's Famous “Little Black Book”: his handwritten ledger containing the hat sizes of hundreds of a virtual Who’s Who of the Entertainment Industry's biggest and most legendary stars! Eddy Baron was the founder of Baron Hats for virtually the beginning of Hollywood and a legend in his own right. Lucky for us, he kept hyper-scrupulous notes in this priceless notebook. You'll find everyone from Judy Garland to Madonna, from Clayton Moore to Tom Petty all chronicled in Baron's wonderful archive in his meticulous handwriting.

"The Book" as it has become reverently referred to by Hollywood Industry insiders contains the most complete listing of celebrity hat sizes in the world! So scroll on down to view the books contents, some even include some special additional notes made by Eddy. Or else enter your favorite star's name in our special “Celebrity Hat Sizes Search Engine” above and see if they're listed. We take great pleasure in opening up our massive Hollywood History archives, for the first time, to the general public, and we hope you enjoy this unique insight into Hollywood lore! Come back often, since there’s much lore in store! For an even more detailed look into Baron California Hat's History, check out our “Historical Production Notes” section!
