PLEASE HELP ID - HAVE A STACK OF VERY SILENT STILLS!

Unread post by [email protected] » Thu Oct 09, 2014 3:17 pm

Howdy -

Just received a collection of early and unusual silent stills from an estate and have some questions about them.

For one thing - the size is 6.5 x 8.5 inches - they are definitely authentic and period.
Did any companies use this size still as a standard for exhibition in the early days?

About half of these stills have a name with a 4 digit number beside it.
Multiple stills have the same number, so am thinking perhaps this is a director name with production number.
Some examples are:

McGreagor 1324
McQuarrie 1309 and 1456
Worthington 1245
Curtis 1464
LeVines 1290
Kent 1432
and others.

Can show you pictures if you email me.
I think I am having troubles downsizing to fit the format's techs, so the single image I sent may not be visible.

Hope some of you early still experts can help.
These shots are intriguing material and I’d love to further ID by studio, title and talent.

Thanks

The guy in the center looks like Hobart Bosworth.
Otherwise the image is too small for me to see the other two players.
(But I'd love to see what else you have. Please post them!)

Essanay and American had stills that were 5 x 7, so there are companies that used odd sizes. Don't recognize what you have, though. The name McQuarrie jumps out. Could that be Murdock MacQuarrie? He did some directing in the period 1914 and 1922. You might check the companies he worked for.

Alan,

Based on the sample still these are all Universals ca. 1914-1915. I have title IDs on most of them. Send me a private message with your email address.

Virtually every production company employed 5x7 stills in the teens, it was not until the late teens-early 1920s that 8x10s became the standard. Bob is right, those do appear to be Universal still codes.

To illustrate Bob and Miss Dupont's point, here is a smaller Universal still from Mother O' Mine (1917).

Image

The still code is JULIAN-2476-22. This means that it was directed by Rupert Julian, it was production #2476 and it is still #22.

That is Julian on the left, with Ruth Clifford.

Hi - Have been tying to reach Bob Birchard, but email on his website doesn't seem to be working. If he is out there - here is the list of names and Prod. Numbers for the early Universal stills for which I am searching information. If anyone else can ID these titles - that would be great!

McGreagor 1324
DeGrasse - 1246
McQuarrie 1309 and 1456
LeVines 1290
Kent 1432 AND 1469
Curtis 1464
Worthington 1245
Christie - 1487
LeVines - looks like 1257 - western
Badger - 1266
Ciblyn- 1308 (one of these 2 is spelled wrong - but both appear on diff. stills
Biblyn -1947
Otto - 1439 AND 1396
Turner - 1285

There were a number of signed star photos - I have listed them on Ebay are up for sale at the moment.

I have also just launched my own website - loading stuff now - Have collected stills since 1957 when I was 9 - am selling my collection on the site - bunch of titles will go up this next week. Go ahead and bookmark me and keep checking!

Thanks - Alan J. Adler
