Silent movies in Under Pressure video by Queen and D. Bowie

Unread post by kelomat » Mon Mar 12, 2018 5:10 am

I made a blog post to identify the silent movie clips in the Under Pressure video by Queen and David Bowie. There are a lot of them and many sources are still unknown.

Your help is appreciated.

Here you'll find screenshots from the video:

#s 19 and 20 is Jack Buchanan in "Happy Ending" (1925).

The woman in #23 is Gloria Swanson, but I can't put my finger on the film.

Thank you! Jack Buchanan seems right, but judging from pictures I would say the clip is from 'Monte Carlo' (1930). Do you agree?

You're right! Thank you! The film is 'Manhandled' (1924).. Here's the scene on Youtube.

No, it is not Monte Carlo(1930) which I have seen many times.
That film is on DVD, if you want to see for yourself. The only woman Jack kisses in "Monte Carlo" is Jeanette McDonald, and that is not Jeanette McDonald.

Just look at the quality of the film. It is on orthochromatic film; Monte Carlo is on panchromatic.

How do you know it's 'Happy Ending'? Have you seen that? I can't find much about it. The tuxedo with the white flower made me think it was 'Monte Carlo'.

Here's an older thread about the clips in Under Pressure, by the way.

I believe it is a lost film, and only a fragment remains.

I have seen several stills online.

A hot lead points to Confetti (1928) featuring Jack Buchanan and Annette Benson.

The source for all the silent clips seems to be Philip Jenkinson's video collection Filmfinders (he made ersatz music videos for the BBC show The Old Grey Whistle Test). David Mallet apparently used his collection for the Under Pressure video.

I found this longer version of the Jack Buchanan kissing scene.
I checked Monte Carlo by the way, it's available here under the title The Blue Coast.
