The Sheik's Physique

Unread post by Danny » Sat May 24, 2008 5:45 pm

I am new here, so this may have been discussed before. There is a Rudolph Valentino clip on YouTube called "The Sheik's Physique". In it, Rudy winks at the audience, undresses himself in his car and slips into a bathing suit. Then he suns himself on the beach. I was wondering what film this is from. I don't remember seeing it before. thanks

The Sheik's Physique has been sold for years on 16mm. It is available on the David Shepard/Image Shiek/Son of the Shiek DVD.

The SilentEra website has this description, "Standard 35mm spherical 1.37:1 format. / The film was likely part of a compilation split-reel. [?] The film was likely shot in 1925 because of RV’s long sideburns from The Eagle (1925), and the fact that he is not wearing Natacha Rambova’s ‘slave’ bracelet."

Donna Hill is our resident Valentino expert. I'm surprised that there is nothing on her website about this film.

Well, it's not on my site since I really do not know the whole story on how the film came to be. Silent Era is correct in the assumption that the film was shot during the time Valentino was filming The Eagle. The slave bracelet has nothing to do with it, Valentino was still in makeup, so chances are the SB was removed as it was not a part of his costume (as it was during Son of the Sheik).

No clue why it was shot, but clearly Valentino was having some fun. Very interesting, as well, because he was going through some severe personal problems (marital vacation from Natacha Rambova). The Eagle seemed to be a very happy shoot for Valentino judging from the on the set candids I have.
