By pure chance, I was able to get a vintage copy of the misidentified still for myself. It definitely has the 327-x still code for The Enemy.

SMH. Kids just don't recognize the greats. Like Margaret Dumont there.

No, everyone knows that Bingo and Bobbo had left the act by that time to became agents.

I can recognize Harpo by the curly hair, and Chico still looks like Chico even when he's wearing a dress. But it's hard to spot Groucho without his moustache. And is that Zeppo in the painting hanging on the wall?

While this is definitely funny, it's obviously just an error. This is an auction that will eventually go away. It's not a photo business that keeps up a bad identification, or a factual website that won't correct a factual error.

This image of Alice White is circulating on social media today to celebrate the 116th birthday of Zelda Fitzgerald:

Image

The trouble is, changes to the way Google processes image searches using Chrome's 'Search Google for Image' function means this sort of thing will be happening a lot more often.

The search engine now 'guesses' a probable description of the picture based on its context. For example, when I used the link from the already erroneous source to find other examples of the same image, it automatically added the term 'Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald' to my search, distorting the results, increasing the false impression that this was in fact a picture of Zelda Fitzgerald, and making it even harder to prove that it isn't.

In other words - someone who misattributes a photo via some careless Googling is now even more likely to perpetuate that error.

Ah, it is, too. The ridiculous thing is that I had so much trouble cross-checking it via Google Images that I gave up. Case in point!

This is from the Wikipedia article on Daisy Earles (with three footnotes, no less!):

Daisy Earles acted with her brother in Tod Browning's film The Unholy Three (1925), which was filmed in both silent and sound film formats.[6][2][7]

I wonder if some of these errors are wilfull. Getty Images claims to manage the rights for this image: http://www.gettyimages.com/license/515356748" target="_blank
Image
It's misidentified as a documentary image of a cinema interior, but it's really just a blow-up of a still from Mabel's Dramatic Career (Sennett, 1913). (Ford Sterling is misidentified as Ford Skating, and they fail to note that Fatty Arbuckle and Mack himself are sitting in the foreground with their backs to the audience. Does anyone know who has the rights to this film? I imagine they'd have grounds to sue. Or at least send a cease and desist letter! I wonder what other images Getty has misidentified that they are making bank off of because of their willful ignorance. . .

I thought as much. How, then, can Getty charge $575.00 for "standard editorial rights" for this image?!?!?

They can charge whatever they like. Some people will pay it.Others will go to where they can get it cheaper.

I imagine some business customers might prefer to pay Getty's fee rather than risk future relations.
