DANCES OF THE AGES (1913)

Unread post by drednm » Fri Sep 29, 2017 11:04 am

Found this by accident on YT.

It seems to be a bit of Denishawn footage of Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis, but seems to include parts of the 1913 Edison film Dances of the Ages which featured Ted Shawn and his then dancing partner Norma Gould.

More interesting than I had first expected. Nice that they first introduced the dancers as each removed their robes...all were equally attractive in these modern bathing suits. For 1913 this was surprising.
The split screen used later to show the history of dance was nicely done, switching to the next before one might become bored with what they see. All this in under 10 minutes...amazing.

Nice images and titles from 1913.

Fascinating stuff. The outrage at the horrible youth craze of "ragtime" was hilarious. These kids and their music of today...

About half the film is shown here. The other portion concerns an old dance master and his pupil (Dorothy Davenport) and a big dance production choreographed by and starring Ted Shawn. I've contacted the people at Jacob's Pillow in Massachusetts to see if they actually have the entire 1913 film.

I'm told by Norton Owen at Jacob's Pillow that the complete film may reside at Eastman... He also says that his archive has five or six film scripts Shawn wrote that were never produced....
