After a bit more than 4 days, the Kickstarter fund has gone over $9,000. Ben can set his doorbell to play "My G*d, How the Money Rolls In" while he thinks about the next stretch goal.

There are more Alice Howell films extant than there are of Al Joy. (So far only 1.5 AJs survive.) Next stretch goal is to get the word out to more fans. Project is currently at 244 backers, and I'd like to think there are 300 people who like the idea of resuscitating the career and films of a forgotten silent era comedienne.

Thanks for supporting the project!

Thank you so much Ben and Steve! When I received my e-mail for this I almost danced a jig. Now that this is a two disc project, how do we find out the difference in cost from the one disc version and how do we throw in that difference?

I've seen DISTILLED LOVE and it is really choppy, however, Alice's talent shines through.

I'd eat a bug if I could get my mitts on a print of one of Alice's L-KO three-reelers.

Thanks fellows!

FYI...DISTILLED LOVE will be complete. The 35mm material has only been seen in its unrestored state, with most of it out of orde and some footage missing. LoC now has a second source, a complete 16mm Kodascope. These two will be combined.

The initial stretch goal toward making this a 2-disc set was reached yesterday. Currently we are aiming to get to a backer total of 300 backers.

Thanks!

Makes it all that much easier to put out a Complete Surviving Films of Al Joy set!

(How about putting them on your next Accidentally Preserved? I'm sure any Al Joy comedy could only have been preserved by accident. Terrible, terrible accident.)

Congratulations on meeting the stretch goal. I am always excited for numerous releases, but this one tops then all. "Every one a Howell" as her publicity used to say.

Such a great idea for a DVD release -- I'm sure Steve Massa's book Slapstick Divas boosted public interest in cover girl Alice Howell, just as I'm sure I'm not the only one who read it and thought something along the lines of "Geez, I wish more of her films were available."

And it says something about the following Ben has built with his excellent DVD series that this project was funded within hours, and the stretch goal almost as quickly. I pledged the first day, not long after I first heard about it, and yet I'm Backer #98. Ninety-seven people got there ahead of me!

All right, you Nitratevillains and lurkers who have been sitting on your hands, waiting for the Kickstarter for this project to close so you can post to the world that you really wanted to contribute, but you signed in juuuuuuuuuuuust a couple of minutes too late and they won’t take your money! Oh darn!

I’ve seen you through more than a dozen of these on Nitrateville and, yes, I’m calling you out. Ben and Steve have announced a new stretch goal, to get the movies in this collection cleaned up so they look as good as they can. Only it’s not a money figure. They want 340 contributors. As of this moment, that means another 65. I think it’s easily accomplishable, and I will be talking to people about this. And I expect you to go to the Kickstarter page and contribute. Otherwise, I am going to tell my mother’s ghost, who has been haunting me since her death in 1992 (and, truth to tell, for decades before then). You can ask anyone who ever dealt with her, dead or alive, you don’t want her after you. So save yourself a lot of grief and pledge now.

Pledges accepted up until midnight next Tuesday, and every pledge that comes in at this point helps digitally tidy up the nearly 4 hours of rare silent shorts. Kickstarter link is here.

Unread post by JFK » Sun May 06, 2018 8:00 am

Thanks for pledging (if you have)! If you haven't yet, do consider helping fund digital cleanup of all the films on the new 2-disc set. Plus, as a backer, you'll get your copy a few weeks before the DVD is released. Currently the Kickstarter is at 318 backers –– enough to tidy up some of the films, and looking to surpass 340 so every film can get the treatment.

I encourage you to be part of the 'somebody' in 'why didn't somebody clean up all the films on that release?' and make a pledge. The video below is a 'proof of concept' sample of a clip from HER WOODEN LEGACY (1920), a film that wasn't known to exist until it turned up a few years ago in a collection that'd just been acquired by the Library of Congress.

Pledges accepted until midnight EDT on Tues May 8 at bit.ly/AliceHowellKS.

Thanks!

Ben

I am very happy to have contributed to this Kickstarter, and am eagerly looking forward to the DVD and hope the final stretch goal is met.

In a related question, I am just now reading the Anthony Slide Alice Howell biography and he mentions a canine co-star, Fritzie the Dog, who appeared in some Howell shorts. I was curious to know whether Fritzie will be in any of the shorts on this DVD.

Hi Mr. Ben Model,

I'm living in Germany and finally found at least one domestic forum on the internet about silent films. It's not a big one, but at least there are some silent film fans on it. Since it seems that they have never heard of this forum, nitrateville, and the crowdfunding projects, I advertised a little this forum, the projects and especially your Alice Howell campaign.
I hope it works and a few more people from Germany will support your project and get the 340 backers full.

Best wishes!

Can't believe the only Canadian tent is in WINDSOR, of all places! I would have thought Toronto.

Alice Howell DVD project- The Restoration

Unread post by JFK » Mon May 07, 2018 6:43 pm

Here's a technical question from a dope.
When correcting for decomposition- or the "flare ups" (or whatever the suddenly bright patches are called, as at the 0:20 mark of the video)- will it be mostly a matter of cutting and pasting the same undamaged "background parts" of a stationary camera scene into the damaged frames of the same scene, or will the restorer more often be starting from scratch for each individual damaged frame? My attempt at one such correction is below.
