Never Give A Sucker An Even Break Car Chase

Never Give A Sucker An Even Break features W.C. Fields in his final starring role. The film ends with a Keystone Kops-style car chase when Fields frantically drives a matron to the maternity hospital, mistaking her to be pregnant and in labor. (The chase wasn’t part of Fields’ original script – Universal imposed it on him).

The chase is so long and frantic I have two very detailed posts about it. The first part is in the warehouse district SE of downtown, the second part around Glendale, Touluca Lake, and the spiffy new Cahuenga Pass Freeway that opened in 1940.

Thank you! I've been hoping that someone would do this and, big surprise: it's you. I have yet to watch this film without going back to still-frame the bejeezus out of this whole segment.

Now I keep wondering what this film would look like in Cinemascope... :P

Thanks for the great work, love these pieces!

Perhaps Universal insisted the car chase be inserted into NGASAEB, but Fields has first written it into the initial draft of IT'S A GIFT.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. Cars looked so much better back in 1941.

And, of course, the chase was largely reused in the Abbott & Costello feature IN SOCIETY just three years after SUCKER.

Here's my faux trailer for SUCKER (the 16mm print came out great):

Even better than this 2018 one?

Can't argue about the prices, though. The 2018 one cost over a million dollars.

If you listen to the dialogue in the car chase scene, it seems obvious that the sequence was intended for earlier in the film and moved to the end in the final edit. Fields warns Gloria Jean about where he's going(the Russian village in Mexico?)and obviously refers to Madame Gorgeous' deleted death. And there are all these abrupt sound cuts where lines were removed that probably referred to where Fields had gone in the film-within-a-film. I wonder if there's an original shooting script anywhere?
