Devil's Island (1940) missing footage?

Unread post by Phillyrich » Mon Mar 19, 2018 3:02 pm

I understand that the Warner Archives dvd release of the 1940 "Devil's Island" (with Boris Karloff) runs
a little over an hour. I had read that the French Government objected to the film upon its completion in 1939, due
to scenes of French brutality (?), and that some of the grimmer scenes were removed.

Does anyone know about the cuts, and this missing footage?

It was just on TCM early this morning, I've never seen it so I DVR'd it. IMDb doesn't list any alternate version for it, and I'm guessing the version on TCM is likely the same as what Warner Archive has released.

Did you read the description of the film in Boris Karloff: A Bio-Bibliography? It talks about WB's troubles with France's objections to The Life of Emile Zola, and the withdrawal and reworking of Devil's Island, but doesn't specify what the changes were, or which version survives.
