Kino Lorber has just started a very nice sale. From their Facebook posting:

Kino Lorber Studio Classics has a brand new website! Check it out: klstudioclassics.com
To celebrate, we're having our biggest sale ever... 401 titles! DVDs as low as $5.98! Blu-rays from $7.98! Free shipping in USA (orders $50+) and Canada (orders $100+). Sale ends Sunday 8/6 so don't miss out.

To give you an idea of prices, I ordered the following (all blu-ray):

Daredevils of the Red Circle (1939) (12 Chapter Serial) $10.98
Deluge $9.98
No Highway in the Sky $9.98
One, Two, Three $11.98
Road to Bali $8.98
Road to Rio $8.98
Those Daring Young Men in their Jaunty Jalopies (1969) $8.98

(On the silent front, their recent Sheik, Son of the Sheik, and Zaza discs are on sale too).

The Stranger (1946) with Orson Welles, Loretta Young and Edward G. Robinson has been recently released on blu-ray from Olive. It is currently 42% off at Amazon (US).

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074YV2CMJ/_e ... VORAB8INB7" target="_blank" target="_blank

The film is apparently public domain and has had numerous disc releases. The KinoLorber blu-ray is higher priced on Amazon, but is less than the Olive offering on Kino's own site:

https://www.kinolorber.com/product/view/id/1926" target="_blank" target="_blank

I couldn't find any reviews of the new Olive offering. I don't own either disc, so I don't know which is better; although the Kino does have a commentary track and other extras.

I own the Kino DVD (not blu-ray) of THE STRANGER. I won it as a door prize at Mostly Lost a few years ago!

It looks very good, and comes from a Library of Congress restoration.

Deep Discount is offering between 40%-45% off Criterion titles. The discount code "AUTUMN" gets you another 15% off and also applies to almost everything on the site. If you order enough Criterions to get free shipping ($25) it works out to just over 50% off altogether.

Don't know if this set has been mentioned before, but I just found online Mill Creek has released a bargain set of Columbia musicals - 20 films on 5 discs which usually sells for well under $20 online and in stores. Many of these titles are sold as custom Sony dvds in the $15-20 range each. The set can be found online as either 20 Musical Pack or 20 Musical Movie Collection. When last I looked, the Criterion promotion was still on, but the AUTUMN promo code has expired.

Mill Creek is an interesting company, licensing titles from Columbia/Sony just like Olive and Twilight Time do with Paramount and 20th Century Fox, but selling them for a fraction of the price. The discs are completely no-frills, but then so are Olive's most of the time. I got the Mill Creek blu-ray of The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T for $10 and it's a great looking disc. Then I learned there was a deluxe blu-ray available in the UK, but for three times the price, so I think I'll stick with my film-only release.

They've also been releasing Columbia's Hammer Horror titles in various incarnations, on DVD and blu-ray, for bargain prices. At least they get the aspect ratios right, unlike Universal's recent Hammer blu-ray set where a bunch of 1.66:1 titles were blown up to 16X9, losing a noticeable amount of picture info in the progress.

EDIT: I guess only Brides of Dracula was shot in 1.66:1, so it suffers the most from the slapdash transfer (its frame shares the same frame topline as the previous correct transfer, so the cropping was all on the bottom), but three other titles were also compromised by being zoomed from 1.75:1.

I think this sale runs for a while, so in this case you may have time for another paycheck, loan, last bank heist, whatever.

I bought this at Walmart, for the same price, a few months back. The couple that I've looked at looked good to me.
