New moderator Michael Mortilla

Unread post by Mike Gebert » Sat Jan 05, 2008 9:44 pm

Well, we passed a milestone (pun intended) today: we had our first spam registration. The fact is, at some point we will start to have the occasional scumbag Viagra seller or porn peddler posting on our site. (The weirdest on my food board was an appliance repair guy. In Egypt. I kid you not.) And occasionally, alas, this will include the hopefully brief appearance of material that, shall we say, violates the Hays Code. By a LONG ways.

This said to me, it's time to have more than one set of eyes on the board with the power to remove this kind of junk and, in general, help police the place to ensure the level of civility that we have enjoyed in our brief existence so far. Michael Mortilla has long served as a moderator on a music-software related PhpBB site which is vastly larger and busier than NitrateVille is, and so he has kindly volunteered to bring the same experience to monitoring traffic here. Thank you, Michael, for taking on this necessary job.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Mike. But I'm not sure I would have booted the appliance repair guy from a food site. Seems relevant to me.

BTW, what is the food site URL?

TIA.

www.lthforum.com

I linked it in one of my original posts, but I probably should have referenced it specifically rather than leave the question hanging...

More new spam-zappers

The spammers keep signing up but we're mostly successful at zapping them before they post their icky stuff. I'm pleased to announce that two more folks have volunteered to join the spam patrol (well, they're moderators and site admins in general, but other than spam, there happily remains nothing to moderate here)-- Bruce Calvert, aka silentfilm, aka the guy who has more posts here than I do; and Knut, from Germany, who has his own board at Stummfilm.de as well, and thus brings us closer to 24-hour, global coverage (now we just need one in Hong Kong). Thanks to both of them for stepping up to keep us more like Bedford Falls and less like Potterville, and remember, every time a spammer is deleted, an angel gets his wings.

Hello,
Mike Gebert wrote:and Knut, from Germany, who has his own board at Stummfilm.de as well,
One small correction:
Stummfilm.de has nothing to do with me, nor with silent movie (It's a funny thing. Stummfilm is the German word for silent movie, but in this case it'a small film company in the ownership of Mr. Stumm.)

I'm running Stummfilm.info and I have a board, but it's nothing with film.

Knut

Okay, added one more late entrant, Danny Burk, who pointed out that he's reporting them fairly frequently, so he might as well have the power to simply zap the swine.

We suddenly have quite a crowd behind the scenes, but I for one am deeply grateful; the other morning when I got up, there were 14 of the pests who had signed up between Michael's Pacific bedtime and my Central rising time, and had to be deleted, one by one. It really was starting to eat into, if not my time, at least my energy for reading and posting about old movies, so I'm grateful to split up the duty among a larger group and let it be less of a burden on each one individually.

So thanks to all of the above for volunteering and keeping NitrateVille focused on old movies, not on Totally Hot Action.
