silent 1929 nitrate fragment ID help sought.

Unread post by Darren Nemeth » Sun Aug 10, 2008 7:18 pm

Here is a 45 second nitrate film fragment that was found in the UK.

Does anyone recognize the two actors?

I figure this should be an easy film to identify due to the few silents released '29. :) I've had it for about a year and can't make heads or tales of it!

Also, one who has a sharp eye can spot a continuity error in this scene.

Also, here are a couple of edge codes I haven't seen before.

"C.Kodak" and a star burst symbol. What do those mean?

It's possibly British as the gentleman appears to be rading a copy of the Daily Mail other than that, I have no idea.

DUH, I just saw what you wrote at the beginning about it being from the UK. Sorry.

I firmly believe it's Henry Edwards....the reading of The Daily Mail rang distant bells, and I think it appeared, ironically, in one of his German films, Angst http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0213451/ in which case that might be Valery Boothby. I'll pass this on to a friend of mine on the Steinhof project who might be able to confirm....or deny.
I could use some digital restoration myself...

It's certainly Henry Edwards. According to Filmportal.de, there's a copy of Angst (sound), if that's the film, in the Bundesarchiv-Filmarchiv.

I saw Angst when it was shown at Pordenone in 2003, as a silent with German intertitles, and the catalogue describes it as being from the Bundesarchiv-Filmarchiv too. I assume the above print has a music-only soundtrack added later?
No news as yet from my friend who works in the Steinhoff Project - they initiated the restoration of this and other Steinhoff films shown at Pordenone in the last five years or so.

My error - it just says film, so presumably exactly as you saw at Pordenone.

Thanks for identifying the clip! :)

BTW, for those who didn't see it, the continuity error in the film is the position of the hands on the clock.

Anyone know what "C.Kodak" means?

Compagnie Kodak? (Hey, they could have gotten film from Paris...)

Oddly enough, I'd never heard of Angst two weeks ago, but somebody on AMS posted a link to a German site with posters, and I happened to poke around and save a few I especially liked, and...

We're happy it's Henry Edwards, but Angst is still tentative.....mind you, the poster image does resemble the lady in the clip.

She's pretty distinctive, I'd say it's definitely the woman on the poster in the clip. Now, could be they made another film together.

I've just heard back from my friend in the Steinhoff project - who apologises for the delay, he was in Bonn for the festival - it is indeed from Angst, about 8 minutes from the beginning.
He also wanted me to ask if there was any more material emerging from the same source...!!??

I thought so...no harm in asking !! If there was more, it could have assisted in a restoration project.

It's unlikely, but could C KODAK stand for Cine Kodak? Probably not- that was their name for the home movie line.

I'm not 100% because the silent drama is not my thing, but the guy in the frame grabs looks a lot like Walter Miller to me, and the girl... ?

Now if it were a comedy...

The woman looks like Valerie Boothby:

and the man is definitely Henry Edwards:

So it must be Angst.
